Biography

Maria Carmela (or Carmela Maria) Castro (also Cascio or Lo Cascio) is the youngest child of Calogero Castro and Giuseppa Monteleone, Corleone native residents. Carmela Maria is born and baptized in Corleone on 3 December 1828. Her godparents are Giuseppe di Caro and his wife, Rosa.[1] The record of Antonino and Carmelo's marriages says they were born in Marineo. On 9 September 1833, a bounty is set for the capture or killing of Maria Carmela's older brother, Giuseppe, called Rapanzino (the abductor).

Her father, Calogero, lived on the strada del Canc. Catinella, in the Porto Salvo district, in 1811, and nearby on the strada di Colletto the following year. In 1834 he and his family return to the strada di Don Vincenzo Catinella. This record gives Maria Carmela's age as ten years old (b. 1824). Her older siblings, including Giuseppe, and her grandmother all live with her.

Giuseppe is killed on 8 July 1836.

In 1837, her brother-in-law, Antonio Milone, who is married to Anna Felicia, takes part in a Republican insurrection, and is put in irons. Antonio's brother, Leoluca, is executed for leading an angry mob that kills four.[2]

In 1840, Anna Felicia (called "Maria Felicia Sanzone" in this record), 27 (b. 1814), and their two children, Maria Carmela, 6 (b. 1834), and Giuseppa, 3 (b. 1838), live with her sister, Maria Carmela, 17 (b. 1823), on the strada di Catinella.[3] Antonio is evidently still imprisoned. He will return to Corleone before his death in 1872.

Maria Carmela marries Antonino lo Jacono on 4 November 1849. Her parents have both died by this time.

Maria Carmela and her husband (who is more often called Antonio) have at least five children: two sons named Giuseppe (1850 and 1852), Salvatore (1854), Antonino (c. 1867), and Carmelo (c. 1874).

The first son named Giuseppe is born and baptized on 7 March 1850. His godparents are Bernardo Cordero and Maria Latorre from the commune of San Giuseppe Jato. He dies 3 September at six months of age.

The second son named Giuseppe is born and baptized on 22 January 1852. His godparents are Mariano Triolo and Carmela Triolo, wife of Giuseppe Frisella.

Carmela and Antonio stand as godparents to Maria Grazia di Salvo, daughter of Antonino di Salvo and Antonina Gelso, on 2 October 1853.

Salvatore is born and baptized Salvatorem on 9 January 1854. His godparents are Salvator Streva and Cajetana Cutrera.

I estimate that Antonino, the younger, is born around 1867, twenty years before he marries. His marriage record says he was born in Marineo.

I estimate Carmelo is born around 1874, twenty years before he marries. His marriage record says he was also born in Marineo, and has lived in Corleone since childhood.

Antonino marries Rosa Gariffo on 19 June 1887.

Antonio dies at age 67 (b. 1823) on 7 April 1890. Carmela survives him.

Carmelo marries Maria Mannina on 21 January 1894.

Carmela dies, reportedly at age 73 (she is 74) on 9 May 1898.
