Biography

Antonino Cascio is born on 20 February 1845 to Lucia Pomilla, age 31, and Maestro Nicolo' Cascio, her husband, age 35, falegname (joiner/carpenter), in their home on via del Carmine, Corleone. Francesca Paola de Luca, age 41, the midwife, reports the birth. He is baptized the same day, named after his paternal grandfather, Maestro Antonino. His godparents are Giovanni and Domenica Badami, brother and sister.

Lucia dies at age 40 (b. 1814) on 7 June 1854.

Like his father, Antonino is a falegname by trade. Antonino's wife, Caterina Ragusa, is an industriosa (manufacturer/trader).

Antonino and Caterina are secretly married in the church on 20 January 1869, the year before they register their civil marriage. At this time, his mother has died, and his father is still living. However, the earliest indication of their marriage comes two years earlier, when Antonino and Caterina stand as godparents to Angela, daughter of Leoluca Cascio and Bernarda La Torre, on 27 March 1867. Angela's sister, Maria Antonia Giuseppa, marries Giovanni, Caterina's brother, in 1887.

Antonino and Caterina have at least fourteen children together: Nicolo' (1869), two daughters named Lucia (1871 and 1876), two sons named Francesco (1873 and 1894), two daughters named Francesca Paola (1875 and 1882), Francesca (1878), two daughters named Maria Antonia (1881 and 1886), Nicolo' Giuseppe (1884), Concetta (1888), and two daughters named Giovanna (1892 and 1896).

In each case where there are two children with the same name, based on known customs for naming children, it is presumed that the older child has died before the next one with the same name is born. See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

On 12 December 1869, Antonino, age 24, falegname, reports the birth of his natural son, in his home on via San Pietro, in Corleone, of an unknown mother; this record is found in Antonino and Caterina's 1870 marriage allegati. His name, Nicolo' (the same as his paternal grandfather), and that of his mother are known from the record of his baptism on 13 December 1869. His godparents are Joachim Amari and Maria Lucia, who is either his unmarried daughter or sister.

Antonino and Caterina marry before the state, each for the first time, on 6 April 1870.

Their second child and first daughter, Lucia, named for her paternal grandmother, is born 4 December 1871 and baptized Luciam the next day. Her godparents are her uncle, Joseph Ragusa, and maternal grandmother, Francisca Sances, son and mother.

Antonino's father, Nicolo', dies on 11 May 1872, age 64, survived by his second wife.

The first son named Francesco is born 11 February 1873 and baptized the next day. He is named after his maternal grandfather. His godfather is Blasius Birtone.
The first daughter named Francesca Paola is born and baptized 18 April 1875. Her godfather is Antoninus Merendino.

Nicolo' dies at age six on 1 January 1876.

Francesco dies on 14 January 1876 at age two years and eleven months.

Lucia dies on 3 July 1876, age five.

The second daughter named Lucia is born 22 July 1876 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Antonino Cascio (her father's first cousin) and Pietra, his unmarried daughter.
Francesca is born 21 December 1878 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Giuseppe Ragusa and Maria Rosa Piazza, who are not married.
The first daughter named Maria Antonia is born 1 August 1881 and baptized Mariam Antoniam the next day. Her godparents are Filippo and Rosaria Berlingeri, brother and unmarried sister.

Francesca dies at two years and nine months of age on 15 September 1881.

Maria Antonia dies on 15 June 1882 at ten months of age.

The second Francesca Paola, known from her civil birth record, is born 12 November 1882. At her birth, Antonino is 38. Francesca is born at 70 via San Pietro, Corleone.
Nicolo' Giuseppe is born 27 March 1884 at the same address. At his birth, Antonino is 39.
The second Maria Antonia is born 25 August 1886. At her birth, Antonino is 41. Maria Antonia is born at 34 via Cammarata, Corleone. She is baptized 28 August. Her godparents are Bernardo Ruffino and Maria Concetta Ragusa.
Concetta is born 14 February 1888 and baptized 27 February as Conceptam. Her godparents are Marco Maggio and Gioachina, his unmarried sister.
The first Giovanna is born 6 December 1892 and baptized on 15 December as Joannam. Her godparents are Nicolo' Cascio and Francesca Paola Cascio, her older brother and sister.
The second son named Francesco is born 13 March 1894. At his birth, Antonino is 49. Francesco is born at 68 via San Pietro, Corleone.
The second Giovanna is born 18 June 1896. Known as Joanna in church records, Giovanna is baptized Joannam 5 July. Her godparents are Giuseppe Di Miceli and Leoluchina Cascio.

Giovanna dies at one year of age (b. 6 Dec 1892) on 1 February 1894.

Lucia marries Giovanni Lipari on 18 February 1896. Her parents are both still living.

Lucia and her husband, Giovanni, immigrate to New York in September 1900.

Francesca Paola marries in New York on 7 March 1901, to Antonino Mattina, son of Cristofaro and Rosa Agusa.

Nicolo' marries Grazia Soldano in New York on 24 October 1909.

Caterina dies a widow at the age of 69 in Queens, New York.[1]
