Biography

Giovanna Cascio Joanna is born 18 June 1896 in Corleone, the fifteenth and last child of Caterina Ragusa and Antonino Cascio. Known as Joanna in church records, Giovanna is baptized Joannam 5 July. Her godparents are Giuseppe Di Miceli and Leoluchina Cascio.

Giovanna shares a name with an older sister, born 1892. It is presumed that the older child dies before the younger is born.

The following information comes from Dr. James Ragusa's unpublished family history:

Giovanna immigrates to New York when she is five years old, arriving on the SS Archimede on 4 October 1901 with her parents and two brothers, Nicolo', age 17, and Francesco, age 7.

In 1905, Giovanna lives with her parents and five of her siblings at 236 East 97th Street in Manhattan. Three of her sisters work as cigar makers. Giovanna and her brother, Frank, attend school.

In 1909, Giovanna's brother, Nicolo', marries Grace Soldano from Corleone.

When Giovanna is 15, her father Antonino dies.

Giovanna, who is now called Jennie, marries Antonino "Tony" Soldano in December 1916. Tony is Grace's brother.

Her husband registered for the draft 5 June 1917 and gave their address as 226 East 118th Street, near Third Avenue, in Manhattan. Also living with them is her mother-in-law.

In 1920, the family lives at 1601 Lexington Ave, near 102nd St, in a six-flat. From this record we know that Jennie is literate.

In 1925, Jennie and Tony live at 139 West Jackson Ave in Corona, Queens. By this time, they are both US citizens.

In 1930, the family had moved again, to 97-12 Northern Blvd, in Jackson Heights, Queens. They still lived there in the 1940 census.

Jennie and Tony did not have any children.

Jennie died in 1962 and is buried with her husband in the Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens.
