Biography

Angela Cascio is the daughter of Maestro Leoluca Cascio and Bernarda la Torre. She is born 26 March 1867 in her parents' home in via Santa Caterina, Corleone. Her birth is reported by the midwife, who gives Leoluca's age as 46 (b. 1821), and occupation as falegname, carpenter.[1] Angela is baptized the next day. Her godparents are her first cousin Antonino Cascio, who is also a carpenter, and his wife, Catharina Ragusa.[2]

On 30 March 1886 at age 19, Angela marries Concetto Birtone, a 21 year old bricklayer.[3][4][5][6]

Angela and Concetto have at least five children: Rocco (1887), Gaetana (1889), Bernarda (1895), Tony (c. 1900), and Giovanna (c. 1904).

Concetto and Angela's son, Rocco, is born 26 June 1887 and baptized Rochum on 30 June. His godfather is Leoluca Virgadomo, terri Burgii (from Burgio).[7]

Gaetana is born 23 July and baptized 26 July 1889, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Domenico Milone and Rosalia, his sister, both unmarried.[8] Because Gaetana does not appear in a 1904 manifest with her parents and siblings, she may have died by this time, or stayed in Corleone with relatives.

In 1893, Angela's father Leoluca dies at age 72.

The date of Angelina and Concettino's initial immigration to New York is not yet known. They have arrived by 1895, when their daughter is born.

Bernarda is born 10 February 1895 in Manhattan, named after her maternal grandmother. According to this record, her mother, Angelina Cascio, is 25 (actually, 28). Her father, Concettino Birtone, is 38 (actually, 31).[9]

In 1904, Angelina and Concettino, and their children Tony, 4 years, and Giovannina, 7 months, immigrate to New York on the Slavonia, arriving 20 April 1904.[10]

Angelina is widowed on 4 October 1938, when her husband Concettino dies in Bronx, New York.[11]

Angelina dies at the age of 74 on 5 November 1942 in the Bronx. Her address at the time of her death is listed as 741 East 216th Street. She is buried on 10 November 1942 in Woodlawn Cemetery.[12]
