Biography

Concetto Birtone is born 15 September 1864 in via S. Leoluca, Corleone. His father, Rocco Birtone, age 23, villico (villager), reports his birth. His mother is Gaetana Mancuso, age 19.^[1]

In 1886, at age 21, Concetto, a bricklayer, marries Angela Cascio, age 18, the daughter of a master carpenter. At the time of his marriage, Concetto's father Rocco has passed away but his mother, Gaetana Mancuso, is living.^[2][3][4][5]

Concetto and Angela have at least five children: Rocco (1887), Gaetana (1889), Bernarda (1895), Tony (c. 1900), and Giovanna (c. 1904).

Concetto and Angela's son, Rocco, is born 26 June 1887 and baptized Rochum on 30 June. His godfather is Leoluca Virgadomo, terri Burgii (from Burgio).^[6]

Gaetana is born 23 July and baptized 26 July 1889, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Domenico Milone and Rosalia, his sister, both unmarried.^[7] Because Gaetana does not appear in a 1904 manifest with her parents and siblings, she may have died by this time, or stayed in Corleone with relatives.

The date of Angelina and Concettino's initial immigration to New York is not yet known. They have arrived by 1895, when their daughter is born.

Bernarda is born 10 February 1895 in Manhattan, named after her maternal grandmother. According to this record, her mother, Angelina Cascio, is 25 (actually, 28). Her father, Concettino Birtone, is 38 (actually, 31).^[8]

In 1904, Angelina and Concettino, and their children Tony, 4 years, and Giovannina, 7 months, immigrate to New York on the Slavonia, arriving 20 April 1904.^[9]

Concettino dies at the age of 72 in Bronx, New York on 4 October 1938. At the time of his death, he is retired and lives at 741 East 216th Street in the Bronx. His wife Angelina survives him. He is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery on 7 October 1938, three days after his death. ^[10]
