William Morton Bernstock, second son of Joseph Bernstock and his wife Lena Lachs, was born on June 13, 1913 in New York.[1][2][3]
On 1 June 1915, William was living with his family on Orchard, in New York. Home at the time were Joe, Lena, Samuel and William. Joe (working as a peddler) reported that he was born in Romania, Lena in Russia and Samuel, age 6, in Poland.[4]
In the 1920 census the family is enumerated under the name Bernstein, rather than Bernstock, leading to speculation that they may have changed their name. This premise was disproven in 1942, with Joseph's sworn statement on his declaration of intent for naturalization.[5] The family: Joe and Lena, with the children listed as Samuel, Willie, and Nathan, was living in Manhattan, New York.[6] It seems probable the enumerator wrote down an incorrect name.
In 1930 William was living with his parents in Manhattan, New York. He had an older brother Sam and a younger brother Nathan.[3]
William married Etta Jacobs, daughter of Max and Clara (Dubester) Jacobowitz, on Oct. 2, 1937 in the Bronx, New York.[7]
He completed post graduate work at Columbia University receiving a masters degree in psychology in 1942.[8]
William began military service in the United States Army on Dec. 29, 1943 at New York.[9] and ended service on Dec. 16, 1944.[10]
William M. Bernstock was the Editor of the Bulletin of Prosthetics Research in 1966.[11]
In 1978 he was the co-author with Robert E Stewart of Veterans Administration Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Program Since World War 2.[12]
William Morton Bernstock died on Nov. 12, 1987,[2][13], and was buried at Mount Ararat Cemetery, Farmingdale. [14]
