Biography

Her maiden name, Dubester, is given in the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 entry for her son, Irving Jacobs (Jacobowitz),[1] and daughter Minnie "Minna" Jacobs.[2]

Clara married Max Jacobowitz on the 21st October 1911, in Manhattan, New York. Her parents are named as Leiser Dubester and ...Ber Heller; and Max's parents as Isak and Rosie Jacobovitz.[3]

She and Max lived in Manhattan, New York, in 1920,[4] and 1925,[5] and were living in the Bronx in 1930.[6]

Max filed a Petition for Naturalization for himself and his family on May 5, 1926. Max's signature next to the "sign here" x marks shows that, although literate, he was unfamiliar with writing in English. The document was witnessed by Isidore Jacobowitz, a retail cigar dealer, and Louis Isaacs, a tailor.[7]

Clara's own Petition for Naturalization was filed on 27 April 1927. As part of her declaration she states that her current residence was 52 Sheriff St, New York; that she was born on 2 December 1897, at Golnick, Austria (her last residence); she has been resident in the United States since September 1904; that she arrived on the vessel La Saconia, which departed from Rotterdam, Holland, in September 1904; that she had five children (naming them as Louis, Yetta, Irving, Minnie, and Rebecca) all born in New York; that her husband was Max Jacobowitz, who was born in 1881; and that she had filed an Intention to become a citizen of the United States on 16 December 1924.[8] Her witnesses are named as Tillie Weinrauch (whose signature appears to be Tille Wienrach), and Beckie Friedman (whose signature appears to be Bieki Fridman), who both state they have personally known Clara since 1 January 1922. Clara's physical description — as given on her filed Intention — says her color was white, her complexion dark, 5 ft 0in tall, 170 pounds, with brown hair, and brown eyes, with no other distinguishing marks.

  • Declaration of Intention #157675
  • Certificate of Naturalization No. V54 V040 (or V046) Nov 14 1927

In April 1940 Clara was living on Webster Avenue, the Bronx, with two of her children, Irving (24, a helper in ?), and Rebecca (18, at school), all under the last name "Jacobs".[9] She was listed as married, with her occupation being household duties, but there was no mention of where Max might have been.

Research Notes

With her marriage date (listed as 21 Oct 1911) being after the birth dates given for Max's 2 oldest living children (who are enumerated in 1910 as having a mother name Celia), it is strongly indicated that Clara and Celia are two different people - and that Clara is a second wife.

Location of birth: Golnick (listed on her naturalization record) doesn't exist. It is possible it is a misspelling of Göllnitz (in German), Gelnica (in Slovak?), or Gölnicbánya (in Hungarian?). It could also be a misspelling of Galicia where her husband is from. Another possibility is Glödnitz. Member Lewerenz-9 looked for a birth record in Glödnitz Catholic records and found nothing. However, if Clara is Jewish, she wouldn't be in the Catholic records. McBeth-165 01:40, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
