Biography

Samuel Bernstock was born 18 Jan 1910, in New York, United States, the eldest child of Jossel "Joseph" Bernstock and his wife Libka "Lena" Lachs.[1]

In 1915 he was living with his parents, Joseph and Lena Bernstock in New York.[2] [3]

On the 5th January 1920, the family was living on Horse the Street, Manhattan. Their last name is given as Bernstein, rather than Bernstock, but the family makeup matches what is known of the Bernstock family, with Joe (31, working as a peddler of fruits), wife Lena (31), and children Sam (9), Willie (6) and Nathan (3y 5m).[4]

In 1930 he was with his parents and his two brothers, William and Nathan on East Second St. in Manhattan, New York.[5] [6]

On the 5th April 1940 the family was living on East Third in New York. Samuel was working as a clerk at the Post Office and Nathan was an assistant manager at a theater. William, having married in 1937, had moved to his own home.[7][8]

Having registered for the draft on the 16 Oct 1940,[1] Samuel began military service in the United States Army on Nov. 28, 1942 at New York City.[9] [10]

Samuel married Ivy Louise Cooper on the 21st April 1945, in Luton, Bedfordshire, England.[11] [12]

Samuel died on the 14th March 1990, in North Bergen Township, Hudson, New Jersey, aged 80 years.[13] [11]

Research Notes

  • The place of his birth is not clear. In the 1915 census, the first record for him, he is shown as having been born in Poland. The later census records all show his place of birth as New York. If he was born in Poland, he came to New York when he was only one or two years old. Smith-40964 20:55, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Information regards Samuel's younger brother, Nathan, has given the mother's last name at birth being Lachs (also spelt as Lax), which gave the date of the marriage for Lena and Joseph as 1909 in Manhattan, New York,[14] therefore Samuel must have been born in New York. Paul-5413 21:29, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
Military records have confirmed the birthdate and birthplace for Samuel.

  • There are two births registered in the December Quarter 1945, in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Could these two be a single child, registered twice? Once as name-initial, then as name? Or was it twins, with baby name-initial dying at birth and no death registration? Only one infant (name) is recorded as emigrating with Ivy in 1946 - both listed as dependents of Sgt Samuel Bernstock, Service Number: 32647127 US Army, and giving his New York address. (Hesitant to name names, as it is likely the child is still living, but want the information recorded.) Paul-5413 16:16, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
