Biography

On the 14th July 1942 Joseph claimed his birthdate as the 22 November 1888, his birthplace as Warszwa, Poland, his wife as Lena from Kolomea, Austria, and his three children as sons: Samuel, b January 18, 1910; William, b June 13,1913; and Nathan, b August 9, 1916, with Nathan being in the US Army.
His last claimed place of residence prior to emigration was Amsterdam, Holland, and the date of his arrival in the United States, at New York, was June 30, 1906, under the name Jossel Bernstock.[1]

Joseph married Lena Lachs on the 10th January 1909, in Manhattan, New York. His last name is spelt as "Bernstok", and his parents noted as Alter Bernstok and Marry Hoch. Lena's last name is spelt as "Lax", and her parents noted as Alter Lax and Regina Glick.[2]

On 1 June 1915, Joe was living on Orchard, in New York. The family consisted of Joe, Lena, Samuel and William. Joe is recorded as born in Romania, Lena in Russia and Samuel, age 6, in Poland. The date of immigration was 1910. (None of which is correct.) Joe is working as a peddler of fruits.[3]

On 5 January 1920, the family was living on Horse the Street, Manhattan. The last name is given as Bernstein, rather than Bernstock, but the family makeup matches what is known of the Bernstock family, with Joe (31, working as a peddler of fruits), wife Lena (31), and children Sam (9), Willie (6) and Nathan (3y 5m).[4]

On 5 April 1930, Joe and Lena, with their three boys, appeared on the census living on East Second St. in Manhattan, New York. Joseph was working as a peddler of fruits.[5]

On 8 April 1940, Joseph (marked as "u" (unable to work)) and Lena were living on East Third in New York. Samuel was working as a clerk at the Post Office and Nathan was an assistant manager at a theatre.[6] [7] William, having married in 1937, was living in his own household.

In 1942 Joseph responded to the requirement to register for the draft (World War II). On these documents he declared his birthdate as 22 Nov 1888, his place of birth as Warsaw, Poland, and that he was unfit to serve due to physical disability.[8]

Following on from his 1942 Declaration of Intention for Citizenship, Joseph's Petition for Naturalization was granted on the 20th February 1945.[9]

On the 2nd November 1953 a Social Security Life Claim was made by or for Joseph. (A life claim is a claim made for disability or retirement benefits.)[10]

Research Notes

  • The LNAB could have been Bernstein, as in the 1920 census, Joseph's last name is listed as Bernstein, with wife Lena, and children Samuel, Willie and Nathan also in the household.[4] Merritt-1144 00:02, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
  • An examination of immigration records found a Josef Bernstein, age 14 (birthdate 1892) , who arrived in New York on March 7, 1906 on the ship Noordam.[14] Merritt-1144 00:02, 9 January 2021 (UTC)

I believe these two suppositions are proven incorrect due to the information given by Joseph on his sworn declaration in 1942. Paul-5413 14:56, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

This Joseph, previously Jossel, Bernstock should not be confused with the Joseph Bernstock who married Carrie Joseph in Ohio in 1922. They are two different people, as can be seen by this Joseph's sworn declarations in 1942 and 1945 that his wife's name was Lena, and that he resided in New York. The Ohio Joseph can be traced in documents as residing in Ohio, not New York. Paul-5413 16:23, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
