Of unknown origin, neither marriage contract nor act have been found for her. She would have been born around 1653 per the 1681 census.[1]
Note: She is called Marie Madeleine on the baptism of her son Joseph in 1683, and Marthe at the marriage of her daughter Geneviève in 1710. Every other act found only names her Marie.[2]
She would have arrived in Québec city on 25 September 1667 aboard the ship Le St-Louis per Migrations site[3] or on an unknown ship per Navires venus en Nouvelle-France site[4] as a Fille du Roy[5], not knowing how to sign.[6][17]
Marriage
Pierre Favreau dit Deslauriers and Marie Benoit were married around 1668, presumably in Contrecoeur, for which records are only partial for the era, no contract nor marriage act has reached us for them. (PRDH says unknown location before 31 December 1668)[1][7][8]
There are 13 known children to the marriage, of which 9 are known to marry. There is an extra, Isabelle, who is uncertain, being only named on Marie's testament in 1720, with no mention of relationship.[2][7] (listed above)
1681 Census: SEIGNEURIE DE CONTRECŒUR
Pierre Torrot (sic) 45 ; Marie Benoist, his wife, 28 ; children : Nicolas 13, Pierre 12, Marie anne 10, Anthoine 7, Mathurin 5, Marie 3, Jean 7 months ; 3 horned beasts ; 5 arpents in value.[9] Note: Pierre's name could be read Lorrot, poor handwriting.[10]
Pierre will leave Contrecœur between 1686 and 1688 to work as farmer for the sieur Pierre Boucher in Boucherville.[11] He will return to Contrecoeur after 1693.
Pierre Favrau dit Desloriers died on 26 May 1708 and was buried on the 28th in Contrecœur (Sainte-Trinité), the record giving him around 90 years of age. Cited present were Antoine Émery and Jean Mazeau.[12]
On 5 March 1720, she dictated her last will to notary Marien Tailhandier. She owned little, but shared it equitably between her children. Here are son singnificant passages of this testament. «Marie Benoît residing in the house of monsieur Lafrenière where Nicolas Favreau was farmer and presently abed ill… gives ten livres to the poor of the Hôtel-Dieu of Montréal… and leaves to Marie Meunier her daughter-in-law for the good care and services she has given and will give, her bed and feather bolster, a sheet, an old coverlet, seven couettes of fine linen almost new, all the linen she gave to make by Paquet weaver, and three pairs of socks and her shoes, a good skirt of carisse and and drugget shirtlets, a coat, 2 handkerchiefs one of cotton the other of linen, and all her shirts.» She also leaved to Isabelle Favreau an underkirt, to the wife of her son Pierre Favreau (Marie Anne Perrault) a jar full of butter, to her daughter Marie Anne Favreau, wife of Saint-Michel, a white blanket, a cape and one pig which was already in her possession, and to madame Sicard of Contrecœur, four coiffs of hemp linen. She also declared that her son Pierre owes her 200 livres she lent him several years ago. This sum must serve to pay her debts and the cost of the testament. She gives a cow currently held by her son Nicolas to her son Pierre, who had received nothing for his marriage. She asks that the furniture of her house in Contrecœur be sold and their value distributed among all her heirs. [11][13] She named Morice Bénard dit Bourjoly, her good friend, as testamentary executor. The witnesses were René Boucher sieur de Monbrun and André Maillot, who both sign, Marie not knowing how to sign.[14]
Death
Marie Benoits died on 11 December 1733 at 2 in the afternoon and was buried on the 13th in Contrecoeur (Sainte-Trinité), aged 90 per the record, cited present were Charles and Pierre Favro dit de lorié her children, Charles could not sign, Pierre signs.[15][16]
Origin listed as Diocese De Beauvais, Ile-de-France (comes from a Rootsweb entry, see below) is unsourced, her origin in France is UNKNOWN.
Not to be confused with Marie Benoit, wife of Jean Hervé, who is the woman who was buried on 28 March 1725 in Rivière-des-Prairies, her husband is named on the record.[18] Jetté makes this mistake[7], but her funeral is quite explicit and names her children present.
