John Winfield Barker was born on September 29, 1831, in Robeson, North Carolina, United States, son of James A Barker (~1782–1856) and Ailey Catherine Musselwhite (1795–1881). [1]
John (23) married Francis Ann Pittman (14) (born on May 30, 1840, in Whiteville, Columbus, North Carolina; daughter of Uriah Pitman and Elizabeth (Ivey) Pitman) on 24 December 1855 in Robeson County, North Carolina. [2] Their children were:
- Winfield Barker (1858–1939)
- John Alexander Barker (1863–1933)
John volunteered to serve with Co. C, 1st Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. He was sent home to recover from an illness and died there. [3]
John died on August 15, 1864, in North Carolina, aged 32. He is buried in Barker Family Cemetery, Lumberton, North Carolina. [4]
