Rachel Virginia Bailey was born 27 October 1877[1] in McDowell County, West Virginia[2] to James Wesley Bailey and Arbella Abigail Dillon[1]. In the 1880 U. S. Federal Census, Rachel lived with her parents, two sisters, and grandfather, Zachariah, in McDowell County, West Virginia[3]. In the 1900 U. S. Federal Census, Rachel continued to live with her parents and now ten siblings in McDowell County, West Virginia[4].
On 19 December 1900 in Elkhorn, McDowell County, West Virginia, Rachel married Joseph Cook Lambert[2]. Joseph was born 27 February 1879 in McDowell County, West Virginia to Isaac Lambert and Rachel Cosbianna Bailey[5]. Rachel and Joseph were first cousins. Rachel's father, James, and Joseph's mother, Rachel, were siblings.
In the 1910 U. S. Federal Census, Rachel and Joseph owned their own farm in McDowell County, West Virginia. Joseph worked as a coal miner. Also in the household were their five children[6].
In the 1920 U. S. Federal Census, Rachel and Joseph continued living on their farm in McDowell County, West Virginia. Joseph continued working as a coal miner, and their household included seven of their children[7].
Rachel was 43 years old when her husband Joseph passed away. He died in March of 1921, crushed by falling slate in the mine where he worked[5]. Rachel and Joseph had at least nine children together:
In the 1930 U. S. Federal Census, Rachel was a widow, living on the family farm in McDowell County, West Virginia. Rachel's occupation was "farm boss". Also in her household were her four youngest sons, and a granddaughter[17] - the child of daughter Francis Viola Lambert, who passed away the year before from complications of childbirth[12].
In the 1940 U. S. Federal Census, Rachel continued living on their family farm in McDowell County, West Virginia. Also in her household were her three youngest sons, the daughter of her deceased daughter Francis, and an aunt[18].
Rachel was 84 years old when she passed away. She died on 15 April 1962 in Bluefield, Mercer County, West Virginia. She is buried near Leckie, McDowell County, West Virginia, in either the Bailey Cemetery[1] or the Lambert Family Cemetery[19].
