Biography

Louisi (Bailey) McKenzie was a centenarian, living to age 102.

Louisi Anna Bailey was born 3 February 1876[1] in McDowell County, West Virginia to James Wesley Bailey and Arbella Abigail Dillon[2]. In the 1880 Federal Census, Louisi lived with her parents, two younger sisters, and grandfather, Zachariah, in McDowell County, West Virginia[3]. In the 1900 Federal Census, Louisi continued to live with her parents and now ten siblings in McDowell County, West Virginia[4].

On 4 October 1900 in Powhatan, McDowell, West Virginia, Louisi married Daniel Benjamin McKenzie[2]. Daniel was born 3 May 1871 in Moore County, North Carolina to Daniel McKenzie and Margaret Ann Black[5].

In the 1920 Federal Census, Louisi and Daniel owned their truck farm in Mercer County, West Virginia. Also in their household were nine of their children[6].

In October 1925, Louisi and Daniel lost their youngest child, Norton. Norton was only five years old when he succumbed to scarlet fever[7]. Sometime after Norton's death, but before the 1930 Federal Census, Louisi and Daniel moved to Daniel's birth county, Moore County, North Carolina.

In the 1930 Federal Census, Louisi and Daniel rented farmland in Moore County, North Carolina. Also in their household were four of their children[8].

Louisi was 71 years old when her husband Daniel passed away in October of 1947[9]. Louisi and Daniel had at least eleven children together:

  8. Bailon McKenzie b. 1914 d. 1999[6][10]
  9. Arabella (McKenzie) Walker b. 1915 d. 2015[6][10]
  10. James Edward McKenzie b. 1917 d. 1968[6][10]
  11. Norton McKenzie b. 1920 d. 1925[7][10]

Louisi was a centenarian, passing away at the age of 102 years on 12 March 1978. She is buried in Prosperity Cemetery located at Windmill Gap, Mercer County, West Virginia[1][11].
