Biography

Cosby Hazeltine Bailey[1] was born 29 October 1882 in Leckie, McDowell, West Virginia[2] to James Wesley Bailey and Arbella Abigail Dillon[1][2].

On 10 Feb 1898 in Maybeury, McDowell, West Virginia, Cosby married James Whitley McGraw. James was born about 1876 in Kentucky to J. and Nancy F. McGraw[1]. Despite her marriage two years earlier, Cosby was included in the household of her parents in the 1900 Federal Census in McDowell County, West Virginia[3]. Her husband James has not yet been located in the 1900 Federal Census.

In the 1910 Federal Census, Cosby and James lived in a rented home in Clear Fork, Tazewell County, Virginia[4]. James worked as a coal miner[4]. Also in their household were five of their children[4].

Cosby's husband, James, passed away sometime before 1920 (a death record has yet to be located for him). Cosby and James had at least nine children together (see research note):

  1. Jasper Wesley McGraw b. 1900 d. 1968[5][6][7]
  2. Clyde McGraw b. 1903 d. 1995[5][6]
  3. Charley Verno "Luke" McGraw b. 1904 d. 1997[5][6][8]
  4. George McGraw b. 1907 d. 1974[5][6]
  5. James Brenan McGraw b. 1909 d. 1938[5][6][9]
  6. John Obel McGraw b. 1911 d. 1996[5][6]
  7. Whitley Eugene McGraw b. 1913 d. 2004[5][6]
  8. Willard Artist McGraw b. 1914 d. 1995[5][6]
  9. Dorothy Lorraine (McGraw) Whitt b. 1917 d. 2008[5][6][10]

In the 1920 Federal Census, Cosby was a widow living in a rented home in Raleigh County, West Virginia[5]. Also in her household were nine children and a nephew (a son of Cosby's sister, Rachel)[5].

In the 1940 Federal Census, Cosby lived in the household of her son, John[11]. Also in the household was John's wife and their first child[11].

Cosby was 72 years old when she passed away[2]. She died on 2 November 1954 in the home of her son, John, located in Fireco, Raleigh County, West Virginia[2]. She is buried in Farley Hill Cemetery located in Raleigh County, West Virginia[12].

Research Notes

Children of Cosby and James

In the 1910 Federal Census, there are five children in the household with Cosby and James[4]. In the 1920 Federal Census, there are nine children in the household (the five who were present in the 1910 Federal Census, and four more born since then)[5]. Those nine children are listed above. The obituary of Dorothy Lorraine McGraw (daughter of Cosby and James) also supports the nine children listed above, naming eight siblings, all brothers, who passed away before her[6].
The 1910 Federal Census also indicates that Cosby was the mother of seven children, and six of those children were still living[4]. Since Cosby's household only included five children in the 1910 Federal Census, it is possible that she had two more children, in addition to the nine listed above. Other records supporting a 10th and 11th child have yet to be located.

1930 Federal Census

Cosby and most of her children have yet to be located in the 1930 Federal Census.
