Sir Edmund Trelawny Backhouse, 2nd Bt. was born on 20 October 1873. He was the son of Sir Jonathan Edmund Backhouse, 1st Bt. and Florence Salusbury-Trelawny. He died on 8 January 1944 at age 70, unmarried.
He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England. He was educated at Merton College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He was a Professor between 1902 and 1913 at Peking University, Peking, China. He was a member of the National Geographical Society at Washington, D.C., U.S.A. He was a Professor of Chinese in 1913 at King's College London, London, England. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Backhouse, of Uplands [U.K., 1901] on 27 July 1918. He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.) He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society of Arts (F.R.S.A.) He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.
Edmund was born in 1873 to Sir Jonathan Backhouse and his wife Florence.
He was a British oriental scholar, Sinologist, and linguist.
While his works were influential, since his death it has been established that the source material for his best known work, China Under the Empress Dowager: Being the History of the Life and Times of Tzŭ Hsi, was a forgery - possibly by Backhouse himself.
