Robert Armistead was the son of Henry Armistead of Hesse in Gloucester, Virginia and wife, Martha Burwell. He first married Elizabeth (Burgess) Ball, daughter of Charles Burgess and the widow of Jeduthan Ball. After Elizabeth's passing, he married to Anne Smith, daughter of Gregory Smith and Lucy Cooke. She was the sister of the Reverend Thomas Smith, rector of Cople Parish in Westmoreland County and Colonel Gregory Smith. Robert Armistead, Gent. succeeded Harry Turner, Gent. as clerk of King George County in 1752 and served in that capacity until 1761 when he became clerk of Caroline County where he died testate in 1767.
Note: Jeduthan Ball died owing land in King George, Spotsylvania and Prince William counties. His estate was inventoried and his Will proved in King George county. It is likely Robert and Elizabeth married there in late 1750.
