Martha Burwell Armistead was the daughter of Anne Smith, a daughter of Gregory Smith and Lucy Cooke and second wife of Robert Armistead. Robert Burwell Armistead was the son of Colonel Henry of Hesse in Gloucester County and Martha Burwell, a daughter of Lewis Burwell. Miss Martha Burwell Armistead was named after her paternal grandmother. She married to Benjamin Dabney and was the mother of three children, George, Benjamin Jr., and Anne Dabney. Martha (Armistead) Dabney passed at a young age, possibly during the birth of Anne, with Benjamin Dabney remarrying to Sarah Smith, Martha's maternal first cousin, in 1991.
