James Babcock (1818 - abt. 1865) was born March 20, 1818; married first to Lovey Roberts; married secondly Mrs. Esther Harrison. We need source for marriage. Also parents are Ichabod Babcock jr. and Sarah Garlick (Pike) Darrow. James died about June 29, 1865 in Troy Center, Walworth, Wisconsin, United States. There is source to a find a grave link with pic of gravestone. It appears both James and Lovey are buried in Evergreen cemetery in Troy Center, Walworth county, Wisconsin. We need help with sources showing parental lineage. Any genealogy help is appreciated.

See FAG Link for James Babcock

Here's a start for James' marriage to Lovey:

"Vermont Vital Records, 1760-1954," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V8MR-MRM : 5 November 2017), James Babcock and Lovey Roberts, , Marriage; State Capitol Building, Montpelier; FHL microfilm 27,671.

Ah good job! This is the proof and a great start to build upon! The record doesn’t show the ages of bride or groom. Also doesn’t show the date of marriage; lots of omitted info; however it Clearly shows it’s her first marriage and name of the reverend and town being South Hero Vermont.

thank you

You're welcome. smiley

Looking at this a little more, I notice for the FindAGrave memorial, the memorial's name and birth/death dates/places aligns with the couple of interest, but the image of the gravestone appears to be for someone else (maybe a descendant). The gravestone is for Lovey Babcock Lacy (1888-1959) which is 2+/- generations more recent than for Lovey Roberts b. 1814.

Yes. I see the stone image is different; however the image of the stone for James says father with correct matching dates of birth and death for him. I’m thinking there is a stone that says mother there also. I asked the person who photographed James Babcock’s stone to see if there is a stone that matches Lovey Roberts Babcock. I placed a photo request for her on findagrave

Still need citation of second marriage for a Mrs. Esther Harrison

Perfect re: FindAGrave info. Just wanted to be sure you had noticed the same thing I saw, which you certainly did! smiley

I'm still browsing around for a source/citation for the second marriage with Esther Harrison. Can you say a bit more about how you know there is a second marriage? That might help me to progress.

I have no records showing he married a Esther Harrison. The manager of the profile I believe has knowledge but no response from her. The Wisconsin migration matches my family history as James Babcock’s sister Amy Babcock https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Babcock-3247  Is my 4th grandmother and her husband Samuel Gibbs is my 4th grandpa. Samuel Gibbs https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gibbs-4800  brother Oliver Wylie Gibbs https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gibbs-4804  also migrated to Wisconsin. Sons of Jeremiah Gibbs. We still aren’t too sure why everyone headed to Wisconsin during this time. Maybe the farmland was cheaper or the civil war issues of the day?

I’m adding categories to his profile but if you know of any other categories please add also

Found the source for Esther Harrison see Babcock genealogy link under sources

it would be nice to have another source also to compare

Yes. The find a grave contributor just added Lovey Roberts gravestone under her page here. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/132506932/lovey-babcock

she died on her birthday per gravestone. Sad must of been a hard life in those times. Early death too!

The 1860 census for James Babcock includes his family plus an Ester (Esther) Harrison. I wonder if after Lovey died in 1860, James and Esther married ... I see what may be a mention/index of their marriage record on Ancestry but am not yet convinced it is relevant.

I've added the 1860 census to James' record, created an unconnected profile for Esther Harrison for the Esther in the 1860 census, created a space page/category for the cemetery where James is buried and added this category to his profile, ...
This is wonderful. Definitely them. I’ll bet she is his second wife. Amy Babcock’s brother James family moves west we’re finally connecting dots now. Very nice!

It's fun to watch you and Susan unravel this! Go team Babcock!yes yesyesyesyes

I found some stuff about Esther on Family Search , but they are indexed marriage records, not the original document which I can't find. It seems to match your people, and indicates Esther Harrison was born Esther Daniels (daughter of Ruth and Leonard Daniels).... but the location of the marriage to James is confusing as to whether it is Wisconsin or Nebraska. Maybe there's a historic reason for this.

Indexed Marriage Record for Esther and John W. Harrison:

Indexed Marriage Record for James and Esther:

Marriage Record of their daughter Nellie which mentions James and Esther:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRRR-55C

Her Family Search profile indicates (no source though) Esther married Curtis Parmley after James died and links to FAG for Esther Parmley.

This is great! We can start to tie in eventually. I’m adding James Wesley Babcock son of James Babcock and Lovey Roberts Babcock. The link below is James Wesley Babcocks daughter who has her gravestone image on Lovey Roberts Babcocks findagrave lol

Wow! Looks like a big Ole Babcock Family reunion going in the Evergreen Cemetery:
Also, looks like his FAG suggests James Babcock, Lovey's husband, died in 1855, but same month and date as the wikiprofile. That has to be a FAG typo given he is in the 1860 Census.
I think a typo also. Evergreen is where this line of Babcocks are definitely buried!! To think they came from Vermont originally !

Yep. And before they settled on the shores of Lake Champlain in Vermont, the brothers Ichabod and John M. Babcock III  had come from Westerly, Rhode Island.

James is in line with Ichabod, but you can see a research note regarding  the brothers  moving from Westerly to Vermont at John M Babcock III's profile:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Babcock-719

This family left a great Westward paper trail!

We need to create the evergreen cemetery for them in categorization. I looked hasn’t been done yet and I’m not good at creating wikitree cemetery categories lol

this cemetery needs to be added

https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/87883/evergreen-cemetery

Ok never mind someone did it perfectly lol

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Evergreen_Cemetery%2C_Troy_Center%2C_Wisconsin

it’s filling up fast
