need help cleaning up sources on a profile please

good morning all. I have started cleaning up my gedcom imported family from Ancestry.ca. I want to replace as many of the Ancestry sources as possible, and replace them with original sources.

the linked ID is my grandfather, I have started replacing the Ancestry links with originals (1911 and 1916 Canada censuses). I'm not sure if I'm having issues or not and was hoping a more competent sourcer can assist me.

I'm trying to name the first instance of a source, and then refer to the name in subsequent references, (also not removing the imho wonderful details kept from the original Ancestry source). Seems like I'm missing something though, the profile doesn't seem to be getting any more concise after the first two replacements. I keep getting errors when I do like the Help page tells me, and I can't figure out why.

If anyone has some time, I'd really appreciate some guidance about what I need to do going forward. I'm kind of stumped and frustrated.

Hi Sandy,

Welcome to wikitree, wow I can see why you are finding it all bit daunting! I’m no expert but personally I would delete everything below source 4 as the info adds nothing for a reader of the profile. You can add a link to your ancestry tree below all the sources you add manually from familysearch. This is my great grandmother profile that I’m working on, it’s by no means finished yet but gives you an idea.

Citation #6 appears to be the main problem, Sandy, as it is repeated numerous times.

You need to locate its first appearance and give the ref tag a name:

<ref name="NAME">(text for citation #6)</ref>

Then you need to locate and replace all other appearances of citation #6 with the repeat citation code:

<ref name="NAME"/>

I sent you a trusted list request, in case there are complications!

I'll be chipping away at the repetitive citations over the next few day, so "Hands Off" everyone else!
