Need help with brick wall: Andersen-4989

So much conflicting information!  United States Census 1900 & 1910 have provided some source information.  It is going backwards that is difficult.  Christian Andersen is his US name.  He emigrated from Denmark via Liverpool in either 1885 or 6 (both years on each census).  He married Jensine Marie Pedersen in Denmark. First child born in Denmark, second child was my grandfather.  He was either Niels Kristian Andersen or Kristen Andersen or Christian Andersen, or some combination therein.  It has been thought that he was born out of wedlock to Anders Jensen. There is no data to support this. My deceased brother has done quite a bit of research and created trees with this information, but i’m not sure it is accurate. I hesitate to create anything in WikiTree for which I cannot provide supporting data. I’ve searched until I’m blue in the face!   Also note, I guess my grandfather, Anderson-39861 changed the surname to Anderson somewhere along the line.

Susie,

I empathize!  I have trouble tracing my Scandinavian ancestors, so I wouldn't be any help. I understand how many name variations there can be, and how "-sen" often became "-son" in the US... and all the name changes that happened after immigration to the US.

Hopefully someone who knows how to read/search the Danish archives will be able to help you.

It might help, though, if you can provide the US state(s) where he was found on the 1900 and 1910 censuses.  It really helps with genealogical sleuthing to have all the clues available. There are fuller source citations that are preferred on Wikitree, which you may not be familiar with yet, but that would be great to add to Christian's profile.  If you can come up with the specific state, county, and date for the two censuses, I can try to  help you with the sources.

Initially the family went to a Danish community in Grand Meadow, MN while awaiting citizenship.  From there they settled in North Yamhill, Oregon...that is where the censuses came from.  I can see this source on my brother’s tree, but had a hard time grabbing source information.  Ancestory.com doesn’t seem to like giving up information without $$!  Family lore (specifically my mother) tells the story of a day in December 1912 when he wasn’t feeling well. “Sine” (Jensine) went to the drug store for medicine. She went straight home and gave it to him; just then the druggist came running in saying “don’t give it to him...it is poison!” He had made a mistake. Great grandfather Andersen died from ingesting carbolic acid. He is buried in the Independence, Oregon cemetery, “Hilltop”, also known as the IOOF cemetery.
That's terrible!  I can't believe a druggist could so easily make that mistake!  Makes for an interesting/sad story, though!

I'm going to see if I can locate Christian in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Oregon.  If I'm able to find him (or someone who MIGHT be him), I'll let you know.  I use familysearch.org for free source information.  I don't have an Ancestry account, either.

Oh, you will find him, his wife and two children....I’m sorry I wasn’t clear.  I have everything needed from his life in the US, including the census.  It is his parentage and name and Denmark records I am trying to find.  I wouldn’t want you to waste your time researching what is already known and cited.  Again, my apologies for not being more clear.
I understand. I just wanted to help you update the existing citations so that others can help you more easily.

I think I found them!  Here is the link to the actual census image on Familysearch.org  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DRSS-4Y5?i=11&cc=1325221

(If you have never used it, you do have to sign up for a free account -- but there is no charge.)  This is the source information for the 1900 US census to put on the profile. You can replace the words "1900 US census" with this:

"United States Census, 1900," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DRSS-4Y5?cc=1325221&wc=9BQL-4WY%3A1030550601%2C1032225101%2C1032260101 : 5 August 2014), Oregon > Yamhill > ED 169 North Yamhill and Checowen Precincts North Yamhill city > image 12 of 31; citing NARA microfilm publication T623 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

There is a transcript of the census information, but it is someone's best guess. They transcribed his wife's name as "Sis M." , but (especially since you told me) I can tell it is "Sine M".

Here is the source citation for the 1910 census.  This time, poor Sine is transcribed as "Sive". (The transcription errors also make it difficult to locate some individuals.)  First, the link:  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRJ6-GFZ?i=12&cc=1727033

Citation:

"United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRJ6-GFZ?cc=1727033&wc=QZZQ-1Y4%3A133639701%2C138485601%2C134287701%2C1589092519 : 24 June 2017), Oregon > Yamhill > Carlton > ED 286 > image 13 of 20; citing NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

I hope someone with some Danish experience comes along soon!

Thank you so very, very much.  Perhaps someone can help figure out if this is, indeed, my great uncle’s birth information....birth year off by one, but I didn’t find supporting documentation for his birth in any of the existing trees.  It is so close! I do not want,to put bad info into the Wikitree site if I can help it.  This also gives a bit of confusion as to the actual name of my gr. Grandfather!

"Danmark Kirkebøger, 1484-1941," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-894D-R9G2?cc=2078555&wc=M52S-W38%3A357516901%2C359770601%2C359890901%2C357662501 : 10 November 2017), Hjørring > Horns > Elling > 1 (1869-1889) Fødte, Konfirmerede, Viede, Døde, Til- og afgangslister > image 78 of 375; Rigsarkivet, Copenhagen (National Archives, Copenhagen).

A snapshot of the birth record.  Sure looks like it could be a match!   Andersen-5040

Susie, try this link at Family Search,  https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZXB-J79 There are five sources that look legit, as well as parents and grandparents names. Those could give you much more to go on. I arranged the sources on Poul Poul Andersen, into order by year. Whomever is caring for this profile has done an outstanding job or sourcing and adding information.Good Luck!

Thank you so much for finding this.  Sadly (for me) not the correct individuals. I so much appreciate your time and attention, however!

Susie, I can help you with the out-of-wedlock part. His baptism record: "...Frederik Axelsen … Hustru Ane Margrethe Andersdatter, 28 Aar, af Elling gaard, og udl. Barnafader Enkemand Anders Jensen af Sønder Birket i Taars sogn. …" translates roughly to "...Frederik Axelsen's [something] wife, Ane Margrethe Andersdatter, age 38, of Elling farm estate and alleged baby's father, widower Anders Jensen of Sønder Birket in Taars County."

I will try to expand Christian and Jensine Marie's family tree a bit.
