Need sourcing before I complete a merge

Hi all,

I received a request to merge two profiles this week. At first glance, probably the same person, however:

Althouse-5 is orphaned and has no sources. It gives Simeon's parents and siblings. The death date is the same as 'my' Simeon but I can't rely on that??

Althouse-79 has Simeon's wife and children. I have sourced it to the best of my ability at this time. I have NO idea who his parents were.

I am just not comfortable putting the two together yet.

So, if anyone can help with pre-1850 Ontario records, that would be lovely.

Thanks!

PS: It looks like I can only tag one profile! If someone knows how to tag two can you let me know how?! Thanks again!!

From the information you provide, merging these two would be premature. You are right not to do so yet.

The FaG profile offers no info about the father.

Hi Christine, What threw me at first was Simeon’s place of birth. If George Althouse were his father, he would have been born in Grimsby Township where George took out a land claim in 1803. See Source  George seems to have spent his life there. (I added some sources to his profile.) However, Simeon’s son gives his father’s birthplace as North Grimsby, which would make sense if George were Simeon Sr.'s  father. See Source What is your source for Saltfleet as Simeon's birthplace? You still need a better source to prove George is Simeon's father, but this might be a start.

OK, that took me a bit, LOL. (My computer recently died a permanent death and I have totally lost my Family Tree program with all my original work. Ugh).

I got that his place of birth was Saltfleet from his death record. I have just found the record and added it to his profile. Now that I look at it again, the MD was the informant so probably not terribly accurate on place of birth. Now I'm not sure how all the boundaries changed or changed names from the time he was born, but if you look at the map from the McGill Atlas project Saltfleet includes Winona, Stoney Creek, Tapleytown, Tweedside, etc. The township immediately east of Saltfleet was Grimsby, Lincoln County. Who knows. MORE SOURCES!!! LOL.

Thanks for your help Laurie!! Much appreciated :)

Oh no. My power cord is taped with duct tape (so Canadian!) and my computer is on its last legs, too. I hope a computer geek can recover your work.

I suspect Simeon (love the name) moved over the township line at some point, but, sigh, more sources needed indeed.

Have a great summer!
Oh dear! Back it up before it's too late!! I do have a back up but it is two years old; better than a kick in a** though as they say!

I think this heat wave will be the death of me!! On the plus side, there is lots of Wikitree'ing to be done to keep me occupied LOL.

Have a great summer also!
