information on Adaline (Boone Elledge), married to Sheldon Baldwin, Griggsville, IL.

Sorry my original question was too confusing - I misunderstood the character count! Ha! Here is my redo.

I have been told by a genealogist, Tricia DeMoss, through her research, that:

Edward Boone, brother of Daniel Boone, had a daughter Charity who married Frances Elledge. They had a daughter Adaline who married Sheldon Baldwin. Together they had 6 children. The last William Sheldon Baldwin was born in 1841 and 11 days after his birth Adaline died.

Sheldon Baldwin had a sister Elizabeth Baldwin Coupland/ Copeland who was childless. Sheldon gave William Sheldon to Elizabeth Baldwin who was married to James Coupland/ Copeland. William Sheldon Baldwin was “not formally adopted” by James and Elizabeth Coupland/ Copeland yet was raised as a Coupland/ Copeland; it may have not been known.

Elizabeth Baldwin Coupland/ Copeland died in 1863. James remarried to Jennie Vance.

William Sheldon Baldwin Coupland/ Copeland had a son Frank William Copeland. Supposedly when Frank made out William Sheldon Coupland’s death certificate he did not know of William Sheldon’s true parentage, or about Elizabeth Baldwin Coupland raising him, not Jennie.

Frank Lincoln Coupland/ Copeland is the father of my grandmother, Susan Ethyl Copeland Drakos.

How does one find out about an undocumented adoption? Is there a DNA test I can take that will tie me to Adaline?

Thanks for your time,

Kathy (Kathryn) Sue Drakos Cattano

It isn't exactly clear what you want.  Can you uncondense and explain things clearer ?
Please re-read my revised post. Sorry I was confused about the character count! Figured out later it was in the question posed but it was late so I didn't re-do my question until yesterday.

Thanks! Kathy Cattano

Your message is s little too cryptic for me to understand.

I am descended from Edward Boone as well through his daughter Charity who married Frances Elledge.  In my line, their daughter Nancy (1788-1861) had several children prior to her marriage to Nathan Phillips in 1818.  I have been trying to determine if Nathan was the father of my Sophia Phillips (b 1816-1856) Lexington, KY, and a few others.  Their son Nimrod b1829 appears to be the first born in Griggsville, Ill.  The records are sketchy for this family.  I have quite a bit of family from Griggsville (need help especially with my Kincaids - Ephraim, married Sophia and I have not been able to determine who his parents are.  My great great grandmother Mariah/Maria is probably a daughter of Ephraim and Sophia Kincaid. I am a DNA match to their son George).

Working on these families I always go broad (all the siblings) and deep (many generations) to see if I can connect with someone that may have records.  I do have your Baldwins in my tree, but I have not done a lot of research on them.  What adoption are you trying to determine?

Thank you so much for responding. I re-did my question.

Which DNA test did you do to match to George? I don't know which test to take. Ideally I should try to find a brother of my grandmother who may be related to Adaline Boone Elledge Baldwin - but I'm sure he would be deceased. However, perhaps their is a son in one of her brother's line who could take a DNA test.

I am in need of anyone knowing of William Sheldon Baldwin being raised as a Copeland? And if so, did anyone know that he was unofficially adopted?

Thanks! Kathy Cattano
I have taken several tests from various companies.  I get varying results because of the algorithms / testing methods and database of tests from each company.  It is worth taking a variety of tests.  I have had the best results in terms of matches with Ancestry.com and the best in terms of identifying a specific region (town) where ancestor s came from in 23andme.  It was the luck of the draw and who ever happened to test with each company and what kind of information they bring to the venue.

Because family trees are more prevalent in Ancestry.com, I have had really good luck identifying specific relationships.  This is an autosomal DNA test, so male or female can take it.  The more the merrier.  I have found with the 7 in my family (siblings, 1st cousins) some of us may match someone else and some of us may not because we each inherit different DNA.  Since I have access to each test I compare matches against each family member which also helps me to narrow down a match if there is no family tree.

Ancestry.com has a DNA sale until the 29th at $59 ea.  I have bought many and hand them out as presents at holidays.  I help to motivate people to take the tests, register them in Ancestry.com and get permission to add their results to my family tree (because there is a lot of work on multiple branches of families) and then share interesting and important matches with relatives that included those proven back 6 or 7 generations.  We have had luck in confirming some genealogy hunches, some with really incredible results.  I had given up on a Boone connection because there are a few loose ends that are worrisome, but have tons of Boone matches from various of Daniel's siblings, to his parents and some with his father Squire or mother.

At $59 per DNA test Ancestry.com is a very good deal right now.
When and if I have some time I will see what I can find on your adoptee.

Laurie
Thank you so very much for all of your information!

I was researching on Ancestry.com and this is some information I found out.

William Baldwin Copeland was born in 1841 in Griggsville, IL. His father was Sheldon Baldwin (41) and his mother was Adaline Elledge (Boone) Baldwin (34). He had four brothers and one sister.

In 1841 shortly after he was born, his mother Adaline died. The facts say that he was adopted by James and Elizabeth Baldwin Copeland in 1841.

In 1850 the facts say that "he lives with his Aunt Elizabeth Baldwin who is married to James or John Copeland. She is listed as 14 years older than husband. Another child is adopted and lives in the family."

William Sheldon Baldwin took on the surname of Copeland. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Elizabeth Copeland, the four names of their household are documented: James Copeland, Elizabeth Copeland, William Baldwin and the other son, Grafton Nutter.

It appears there was no formal adoption and William Sheldon Baldwin adopted the Copeland name in many records. His military papers represent is name as William Copeland.

There is an ancestry family tree "AO Boone Family Tree" by aaronboone01 where it says that the "source citations attached to adoption". I don't have access to that particular family tree (don't have that upgrade!).

I have found that William Copeland was married and had two children but don't have the time yet to connect him to Frank Lincoln Copeland, who was his son.

Thanks again for your effort in helping me to find our family connection!

Kathy
Ancestry trees may not be accurate. To connect to the wikitree Boone line, you'll need documented sources .
You are quite correct! I do need documented sources.

It appears that you have had much time and experience in researching. Perhaps you could suggest some concrete sources for documentation?

I also believe that the course of humanity has remained steady in family dynamics, such as adoptions, undocumented adoptions, unknown adoptions of which I am very familiar with and suppose you are as well.

I am researching the possible undocumented "adoption" issue regarding Adaline Delefyat/or Delfyat Elledge Baldwin and Sheldon Baldwin's last son, William, born in 1841 and wherein Adaline passed shortly after his birth.

I had previously found Adaline's grave marker. Your reply with a one-liner that she was not a Boone makes my research that much more challenging. My interpretation was that it was another bridge to the fact that Adaline could perhaps be in fact a direct descendant of Edward Boone.

Historians and scientists are always changing their markers to follow the flow of a river that can often change course throughout time. Such is our research! Very fascinating, indeed.

I appeciate your time. Thank you very much,

Kathy Cattano
When I was asked the prove the true parents of American Naval hero Reuben James, born in Delaware, I read every land record in Delaware, for the surname James, beginning in 1766, ten years before he was born until 1838 when he died. I indexed by year, name of purchaser, and witnesses, since witnesses back then were usually relatives and assembled a chain of James men, related to each other when the records said, to my nephew, to my son-in-law, etc. I cross-referenced those names with the available wills. I proved his parents were REUBEN James and Mary Hitchens, proved his siblings and eventually found his grandfather Daniel James.

In many ancestry trees and geni dot coms, he is given a father named John .To insure no one would dispute my findings, I proved to the satisfaction of the project leader that John died before REUBEN James was born. The total number of land records and wills I examined - 311. Needed a lot of coffee. And aspirin for the eyestrain headache. Took a week of digging, about 6 hours a day
Oh my!! That is a lot of research! I am truly impressed.

I hope to have more time such as you had to fully research. I am doing a couple of DNA tests as suggested by another kind person, Laurie Angel. Some of our adult kids are also doing tests. I’m glad they are starting way before I started!

Thank you for your suggestions. Much appreciation,

Kathy

For many many years, genealogy sites for JOHN WOODS

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Woods-461

gave him a wife named Elizabeth Warsop/Worsop/ Warsham.  Many people copying these trees never questioned that.  As you can see on his profile, she has recently been disproven. I was sifting WOODS for the Presidents Project when I discovered this proof and submitted it to the Project Leader, who agreed to detach Worsop as a wife . I just say this as a caution. Don't accept the commonplace. Dig deep. Sometimes you can strike real gold.

As for time, heck of a way to spend the winter break between semesters ! LOL

Adaline Elledge Baldwin’s father was Benjamin Elledge, I believe. I have seen the grave site memorial you referenced. However, it is my understanding that Benjamin Elledge was a son of Frances Elledge and Charity (Boone) Elledge. Charity Elledge was one of Edward (Neddy/ Neddie) Boone’s daughters. Edward Boone was a brother of Daniel Boone.
In addition, on the www.findagrave.com site you referenced, below Adaline’s bio are her parents. If you click on the link of her father, Benjamin Elledge, it will move you to Charity Boone Elledge and Frances Elledge as his parents. And from there if you click on Charity Boone Elledge it will move you to Edward Boone and his wife.
Agreed.  She is descended from Edward, but her father Benjamin Elledge, not Edward Boone.  She is 2 generations removed from Edward.

Edward Boone > Charity Boone > Benjamin Elledge > Adaline.

Laurie
Yes I did mean that!

Thanks,

Kathy
