Trying to find parents of George Henry Armitage

Question

I'm trying to find the parents of George Henry Armitage who was born around 1867 or 1868 in Goole, Yorkshire, England. He was married to Annie Armitage and they had 7 children: Georgina (1890), Clarice (1893), George (1896), William (1898), Thomas (1899), Henry (1904), and Sydney (1911).

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to create a family tree for my mother and have hti a road block. Thanks.

father George, 32, seaman. Mother Hannah, 31. Married 1861. She was Hannah Burton,

Thank you very much for your response. Unfortunately, I'm finding all kinds of conflicting information on the ancestry.com website. There are several George Armitage's listed in Yorkshire born in 1839. :-(

However, I think the one that you mention above is the best bet givien the children listed that seem to match. George (1866-) , Julia (1868-1874) , Hannah M (1871-), Emily (1874-), and Caroline (1876-).

Goole is pretty specific being South of the Ouse/Humber. No-one else is even close.

In 1851 he is the son of george 42, Ag Lab, and Ann 39. He married Ann Revell (Nevill?), Blacktoft, 25 Jan 1831/ 25 May 1831 (see Familysearch., there sems to be some confusion there). Her mother Martha is with them in 1851.

George 1809 died 1870.

That said, there is a lot of rubbish in the Ancestry family trees. Best bet for George is a christening to Mary Armitage in 1809 in Howden.

In addition in 1901 Georgina is the granddaughter of Bricknell, so that may have been Annie's maiden name. I can find her marrying James Watson in 1884, but no marriage of Watson or Bricknell to Armitage.

This is definitely the right George Armitage. I was able to find the following:

• William Armitage (1785-1871) & Mary Penniston (1791-?)
• George Armitage (1808-1861) & Ann Revell (1812-1890)
• George Armitage (1839-1918) & Hannah Burton (1838-1888)
• George Henry Armitage (1866-?) & Ann Amelia Bricknell (1869-1910)

Georgina is the eldest daughter of George Henry Armitage and sister of Clarice Henrietta Armitage (my mother's mother). The fact that Georgina's middle name is Amelia seems to back up the fact that Ann Amelia Brickell is her mother.

Jolly good. I'm just intrigued by George 1808 to 1861. I thought I'd found 1870.

Where did you find Armitage-Bricknell.? FreeBMD doesn't have it that I could find.

With Free BMD I've found you need to play around with the counties to get a result,as the "modern boundary" names weren't always the names used for records in ages past

Regarding George Armitage (1809-1861). The 1851 census shows the following:

• George Armtiage (42)
• Ann Armitage (39) - Ann Revell
• Grace Armitage (14)
• George Armitage (12)
• Elizabeth Armitage (7)
• Mary Revell (82) - This is Ann's mother

The England &Wales Free BMD Death Index (1869) lists George Armitage as dying at the age of 60. This lines up with your assessment that he died in 1870.

As for Armitage/Bricknell marriage. I did find her married to a James Watson at the age of 16. However, the 1911 census then lists her as married to James Armitage. No marriage certifcate is available.

Mike, the 1911 census has her married to George Henry. with 7 children. It saya they've been married 23 years i.e. 1887-8/

RG14/2016 RD Lambeth, SRD Stockwell, Civil Parish Lambeth.

I've just been back through the entire registers for the two years in case FBMD had missed somethi9ng, but there is no Armitage marriage registered.

Current family has it that George and Annie never married as she was in the circus and he was a stage carpenter at the time. .They  were my husband's grandparents as he was one of Thomas's children..
