How do I upload my mother's dna test

I keep following the instructions to add my mother's DNA test on my tree, but when I fill in the info on her profile page (on my tree) and try to add the file I get a message telling me she doesn't have a test.  Nothing will led me upload the dna file.  This same situation is about to arise for my father on a Ydna test he just took;  they're both 92, don't own computers and don't know how to use them and anything that happens on a computer related to them is done by me.  I'm the one with interest in family tree and they've taken the tests for me.  Do I have to set up separate trees in each of their names and upload the tests to their trees before I'm allowed to put the tests on my tree?

You had the same problem I had when I started, a complete lack of instructions.  I found some help in G2G questions and answers and was able to succeed, so I then wrote up something for it here: Connecting DNA Test Results to WikiTree Profiles.  To me, the getting started instructions *have* to mention and explain GEDmatch, and they still don't.  I don't see how the DNA info on a profile can be useful without a GEDmatch ID, or a haplogroup if it's yDNA or mtDNA.  We still need some better and simpler (and shorter) instructions for new DNA users.

(I sometimes think the veterans here know so much about GEDmatch, they think everyone knows what it is!  Most of us had never heard of it before.)

Agreed.  I'm not sure how I figured it out when I first joined and added my dna test (I was already on gedmatch so that may have helped) but by the time I got my mother's test results I'd forgotten how I did it and I did a lot of clicking around the g2g files and help files with instructions that never mentioned the need to put in a GEDmatch # or that you can't upload raw DNA data here.  Even when clicking on Ancestry in the add page opened up the box for adding gedmatch 3 I was just confused since there weren't any instructions about that.    Since I'd forgotten it would have been useful if the how to instructions had mentioned...

Somehow my search strings didn't lead me to your article -- that's really helpful!

BTW I also found it tricky to figure out how to upload my mother's kit on my gedmatch account but connected to her profile--their instructions for that were hard for me to follow too.

I think the people who write instructions often know too much to realize what needs to be explained for the less informed.

[EDITED because my original answer was WRONG.]

Since you are manager of their profiles, you should be able to add each parent's test information:

  1. Go to their profile,
  2. Then select "DNA" under the menu tab that has their WikiTree ID on top
  3. Then choose "DNA Tests"
  4. Select the testing company (or test name) from the pull-down menu
  5. Enter the requested information

Wha--? You were wrong? Wait. Let me write this down. On 8 January 2018 at approximately 21:25 UTC....

All you need to do is register the test information on the relevant profile. There is no file upload involved as Wikitree does not take raw DNA data.

I eventually figured out that I had to upload it to gedmatch first and then use the # assigned there.  I sure never found that in any help/forum files in which I searched.  Had completely forgotten how I got the DNA info on here for myself.  Thanks for the no raw DNA as that helped me figure it out.

You are so lucky that your parents took an interest and did the tests ! Especially your Dad's YDNA. For their family trees on WikiTree that are connected your profile. there is no reason you can't just add their test result ( with their permission) to their profiles on your family tree.

Yes you can but I found it impossible to find the right instructions as my initial attempts to fill in the info just kept getting me "no test" error messages.  Took a while to realize you have to upload it to gedmatch first...
