He confessed in several interviews shortly before his death that he "bought" his WW2 deferment. According to his long-time friend, director/ producer John Ford, Wayne wouldn't even participate in USO shows in combat areas. Martha Raye also blasted him for his cowardice in her bio

I'm more curious about 13th Greatest Screen Legend.  A John Wayne movie is a John Wayne movie.  Every movie he's in is a John Wayne movie.  And he made zillions.  How can you be a greater screen legend than John Wayne?

And Eddie, a statement like the following might be more appropriate:

"Evidence suggests the man was very different from the legend. Two biographies detail draft dodging and refusal to perform at USO events."<ref>cite the two biographies</ref>

Even that, though, could be interpreted as he was a conscientious objector...

But I hope you see my point.

Makes me wonder how we would/will deal with profiles of others about whom there are very strong and divergent opinions-- oh, perhaps someone like the man currently residing in the White House...
