Hey Patricia,

The first thing you will have to find out in researching your Barrett ancestry is whether you descended from the slave owners or from the slaves.  Slave owner Barretts are English and you will see the name Samuel Barrett and others that owned slaves.  These Barretts are related to Hersey Barrett and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.  Some slaves took the name Barrett and as such you will have to find their owners and check their slave registers to find your ancestors.  Like my family of Barretts, you will reach a point if you keep going up the tree, where your Barrett ancestors do not exist.  If so, it means that a slave took the name Barrett and named her children that.  Hope I have helped you here, this is what I found when researching my Barrett ancestry.
