Paths to Maria Edgeworth, gothic novelist

It would be fun to link Maria Edgeworth (Edgeworth-32), who seems to be orphaned, with her ancestor Sir Edward Hungerford (Hungerford-826) as it would provide a path for many to the once-famous gothic novelist related to (though I can't recall the details, think it was through the Leighs) Jane Austen (Austen-489)and who famously snubbed Jane's gift of her novel Emma, passing it on to a friend after reading only the first volume with a remark about thin gruel. Maria was a lion in her day, but now Jane is by far the more famous.

Jane's ancestry could be extended, also. She was descended from Sir Richard Croft on the Scudamore side, which makes her a descendant of King John.

I could adopt Maria unless someone else has an interest in her. I still read her novels.

I've added some dates and sources to her father (Edgeworth-33) and I'll make a start on adding her many siblings.
It's a fascinating family. I added Thomas Love Beddoes, another original.

Yes, they certainly are interesting. I'm currently reading The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science by Richard Holmes, where the Edgeworths and Beddoes make minor appearances in the chapters about Sir Humphry Davy.

I've got them connected as 10th cousins, which seems pretty distant.

do you mean Maria and Thomas Lovell Bedoes? they were aunt and nephew
I meant Maria to Jane Austen, through the Hungerfords.
I had remembered them as being connected through her uncle Leigh-Perrot, but then found that he was just an acquaintance or friend of Maria's. Did not think of the Brydges route, so that is interesting. Thanks for linking Jane up with the Croft side :)

Adoption is easy and you are just the person to be her profile manager...you be able to monitor if the rest of us go too far afield into unknown turf!
