How many Notables can we add to the Italian Roots project?

I just added Antonin Scalia to {{Italian Roots}}. How many more Notable Italians can we add? Should Notable Italians be a category?

Thanks!

You are great!  Thanks for you efforts and encouragement in all areas!
Thanks Michael Maranda!
Glad to see continued life in this thread -- if you are confident someone has Italian Heritage -- even partial -- please do add the template!

(This applies even if they never left Italy.)

-MM
Italian Roots category added to the following Notables:

Christine de Pisan - De_Pizan-1

Claudio Monteverdi - Monteverdi-1

Machiavelli - Machiavelli-1

Michelangelo - Buonarroti_Simoni-1

Pope Julius II - della_Rovere-1

Petrarch - Petrarca-13

Donatello - di_beto_bardi-1

Dante Alighieri - Alighieri-1

Andrea Doria - Doria-31

Botticelli - Filipepi-1

There are more to add, especially popes.
Brava, Isabelle!
Don't forget movie stars like Rudolph Valentino. ;)
How does one add a notable Italian to the template? I'd like to nominate Leo Buscaglia https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Buscaglia-12 Thank you!
Notables is a separate project -- we follow their criteria (and their procedures).  More info on the Notables project is here (but feel free to ask questions here or anywhere on G2G):  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Notables

If anyone notable (or not)  has Italian heritage  - we add our template.   Here we just happen to be identifying Italian notables .. creating their records if they don't exist -- adding our template if they do.

Ideally we should also be trying to improve the profiles of any Italian notables -- adding sources, improving their biographies, connecting their family members, etc.
I am continuing to add families from Alia and Valledolmo in Sicily, but I no longer like the Italian template. The new template practically ignores Sicily, barely showing an outline of our wonderful ancestral homeland. We need a new template for Italian Roots that does justice to Sicily! Maybe we even need a Sicilian Roots subproject with it's own template. :)

Sharon
It's a simple image and I am not averse to changing the image in favor of something else, perhaps a more solid image for the map portion, perhaps another image entirely without being a map at all. If we can come up with samples and share on the mailing list - maybe that would be a good way to explore this?

I also think a sub-project has merit.

I don't understand when you say the  "template practically ignores Sicily, barely showing an outline"  -- It's not ignoring Sicily by any means, though the red/white pattern on that portion leaves half of Sicily red, half white with an outline, as it does with other parts of the map.

The template is more than the image -- which can be changed -- it brings in the Italian Roots category, and now with the new convention one can also include other items like "needs sources" ...

With nationality Italy on Wikipedia connected to WikiTree

by Living Sälgö G2G6 Pilot (298k points)
selected by Theresa Myers

More advanced query also checking nationality

  • Italy
  • Kingdom of Italy
  • Kingdom of Naples
  • Republic of Venice
  • Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
  • Kingdom of Sardinia
  • Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia
  • United Provinces of Central Italy
  • Papal States
  • Italian Social Republic
  • Vatican City

  • List
  • Map
  • Picture
Awesome! This will be a great help.

Problem is that roots is not part of the game just nationality.....

I have seen ethnic groups like Swedish_Americans maybe that could help... ==> we need something for Italien roots...

If that exist we can use petscan to combine a Wikipedia category with the WIkidata Property for Wikidata

Maybe Category:American_people_of_Italian_descent is our friend Wikipedia:Italian_American
but then we just get the American people

Petscan Query https://goo.gl/yNhoXR ==> today 183 people

  1. You get a list of all 183 people
    1. Who in Wikipedia has Category:American_people_of_Italian_descent

      and

    2. Are connected to Wikidata

  2. To find the WikiTree profile
    1. Click on a person
      1. Eg. Bruce Springsteen
    2. You will be in Wikidata
    3. Look for WikiTree on that page
      1. Eg. Bruce has WikiTree ID Springsteen-49

Small Warning

I spent some time yesterday and thought this approach using Categories in Wikipedia and then do a search on every person in those categories was a good approach.

As some people was pointed out as having Italian roots didnt have a "Italien root category"  so why not add that category at Wikipedia....

  1. I added Lady Gaga to this Category
    1. Result  reverted
Not worth including per WP:Overcategorization#Non-defining characteristics when this isn't a trait she's prominently noted for
  2. I added it to Madonna
    1. Result reverted

Not worth including per WP:Overcategorization#Non-defining characteristics when this isn't a trait she's prominently noted for. (TW))

Lesson learned see the searches above as a Breadcrumb. Adding a Category on a wiki person telling he/she has Italian Roots is today something not ok to do....

A Wiki is wiki.... ;-)

Petscan query checking the below Wikipedia Categories for people also on WIkiTree = result 264 people

  • Italian emigrants to the United States
  • French people of Italian descent
  • American people of Sardinian descent
  • American people of Italian descent
  • American people of Sicilian descent
  • Sicilian emigrants to the United States
  • American people of Sicilian descent
  • American mobsters of Sicilian descent
  • American mobsters of Italian descent
  • Italian mobsters
  • American film directors of Italian descent
  • American boxers of Italian descent
  • American criminals of Italian descent
  • American lawyers and judges of Italian descent
  • American military personnel of Italian descent
  • American mixed martial artists of Italian descent
  • American pornographers of Italian descent
  • American professional wrestlers of Italian descent
  • American scientists of Italian descent
  • American sculptors of Italian descent
  • American writers of Italian descent
I can understand their perspective ... things we find worth doing (or detailing)  here won't always be of interest on another wiki (wikipedia)

What about People of the Italian Diaspora?

Can this wikidata query be put on the Italian Roots Project page? Will it keep working indefinately?
Yes its database queries so they will also display new entries added e.g. If you connect new people in Wikitree with Wikipedia/Wikidata by setting the WikiTree ID in Wikidata and this person has nationality xxx it will appear in the list....

@Theresa if you agree that all those people should have a Template or a category I guess

  1. You can define a Database Error for all profiles this query return that doesnt have the template/category

  2. My understanding is that Aleš is looking into updating categories using a bot see G2G
so maybe he also can based on that query add the template/category to all those profiles.....

People of the Italian Diaspora not part

New query also taking subcategories https://goo.gl/RN630b ==> 520 people

see video what I did https://youtu.be/SlUePWZHYZo

Categories
Italian emigrants to the United States
French people of Italian descent
American people of Sardinian descent
American people of Italian descent
American people of Sicilian descent
Sicilian emigrants to the United States
American people of Sicilian descent
American mobsters of Sicilian descent
American mobsters of Italian descent
Italian mobsters
American film directors of Italian descent
American boxers of Italian descent
American criminals of Italian descent
American lawyers and judges of Italian descent
American military personnel of Italian descent
American mixed martial artists of Italian descent
American pornographers of Italian descent
American professional wrestlers of Italian descent
American scientists of Italian descent
American sculptors of Italian descent
American writers of Italian descent
Argentine people of Italian descent
Austrian people of Italian descent
European people of Italian descent
Italian diaspora in North America
South American people of Italian descent

Nota bene the last query was Categories on the english wiki. If you have better categories in another language version then those can be used to combine with Wikidata....

What about Giuseppe Garibaldi?
by Theresa Myers G2G6 Mach 1 (15.4k points)
Is there a profile for Garibaldi?
Thanks!

Also added:

Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Amerigo Vespucci

St Catherine of Sienna

The DB errors "Wikidata unconnected branches to global tree" and "Unconnected orphans to global tree" are pretty good for tracking hidden profiles of notables.

Thank you, I had not thought about that.

I've added a few more including Donatello and Michelangelo, can't list them now as I lost track of what I was doing.

How about Lady Gaga ?

Madonna as well, I guess. (they're private of course, so you'd need to contact the managers to get them in the category).

Where do you find the database errrors, such as "Wikidata unconnected branches to global tree" and "Unconnected orphans to global tree"? Thanks

Just go to the Database Errors Project page. There is a link at the top to the current report (it is updated every week; usually Monday evenings). Go to that page, and scroll down to the errors 568 and 569 on the big array. Click on a figure to get a list of profiles (columns correspond to a period, bef 1499, 1500-1699, etc.)

This will give you unconnected notables, and some of them have Italian roots... Most of them need some love to get connected !

What about actor Robert De Niro?  He is in WikiTree as De_Nero-1 but not attached to any other person.  If I get some time, I'll find some family for him.  -NGP
by Nanette Pezzutti G2G6 Pilot (127k points)

Can someone in the NOTABLES project please attach Robert De_Niro-1 to his parents for me?  I just created Robert Mario De_Niro-3 and Virginia Holton Admiral-2.  They are the ones.  Thanks!  -NGP

notables   italian_roots

I placed a note on  his profile, I hope that gets their attention.  If not, a separate thread surely will.
It's been done!   :)
Hooray!  I may get time to add more family today.

Would Émile Zola fulfill the criteria?

His father was full Italian and has a Wikipedia page as well.

yes.  meets criteria.

What about British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli. If I knew how to add the template, I would!
by Derek Allen G2G6 Mach 2 (22.2k points)

The template is simple -- add this text including the double brackets to a relevant profile:

{{Italian Roots}}

OK done.
He is also a candidate for Jewish Roots... It would be better to add just the category though, as too many templates don't look great.

I have one that I have no information on - since Roger Moore's recent passing, his 3rd wife, Luisa Mattioli, who was an actress for a time, is reported to be Italian. Many sites show her as being born around 1936, but I think she was born more like 1932-1934-ish.

Regardless, you'll have to be on the trusted list, as she is still living as far as I know. Any suggestions on how to track down her information?

I also found lots of news articles about an autobiography titled Nothing Lasts Forever, likely published around 2000, but I can't find a copy anywhere. Any suggestions on how to find it would be helpful.

Thanks!

Should have Tommy Tedesco created. Probably the most recorded guitarist ever. Member of the Wrecking Crew. Creator of the theme to MASH, Bonanza and many others and a fellow Niagara Falls native.

The definition of Notables seems to be "Notable Americans, and any foreigners who show up on American radar".

Many thousands of Italians are notable in their own country.
by Living Horace G2G6 Pilot (635k points)

And we should mark those Italians as notable. The actual standard of notability used by the Notables Project is that of Wikipedia, it's just that the vast majority of WikiTreers adding the template may be Americans. Sharon has the right idea here to holler for help.

If Wikipedia is the criteria, anybody showing up in Wikipedia Italia should qualify. I never thought it was limited to English wikipedia. Is it?

Many people think the non-English versions are just the same thing translated, but actually they're different in many ways.  Sometimes the genealogy is different in English and French.

This is where it gets silly that all English-speaking countries have to share one version.

Actually that's not right.  There's a Scots dialect version.  It's hilarious.

LOL! I just found the Picard version:

https://pcd.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accueul

My ch'ti mother would love it...
Don't feel bound by any particular language (English) version of wikipedia!
