Question

Is this Edmund the Gateway Ancestor, or is it his son who came to Virginia? Or is he a Gateway Ancestor because profiles for his uncle & him were merged?

The profile is badged as a Gateway Ancestor (a Magna Carta descendant who came to the Americas), but his profile has died in England, so after I added categories, I read the bio to see if he'd gone to America & then returned to England. That didn't help, because the bio text gives info for him & then later says that's his uncle, and then says it was Robert Kempe's grandson Edmund (son of this Edmund) who went to Virginia.

Could someone who works with the Kempe family take a look?

Liz, these Kempes liked to repeat family names, so it took some detective work to figure out which Edmund is the Gateway Ancestor.

I found the answer in Vol I of MCA in the List of Colonial Immigrants.The Edmund who is listed as a Gateway Ancestor  on page 170 of Vol II (and there are two Edmunds on that page) is referred to specifically as being of "Pinaketank, Lancaster (later Middlesex County) Virginia.

Only one of the Edmund's qualifies, and it is the one who died in 1660, probably there on his estate on the Peacketanke River in Virginia.

The answer would certainly seem clear to me -- it is the one who was born on one side of the pond and died on the other -- the son -- who is the Gateway Ancestor.  And to become true biographies, both father and son's profiles would benefit substantially from your (or someone's!) editorial skills.
