When did Henry Sanders Webb really die?

Hello, I hope someone can help explain what I have found for someone in my network, Henry Sanders Webb.

Born in Sevenoaks, Kent in 1849 to John and Maria Webb (nee Sanders)

Immigrated to NSW as a child with his family.

Married Elizabeth Jones in 1871. Wedding record shows his parents as John and Maria (nee Sanders). SO THIS IS HIM!

Now, this is where I get confused ....

I have found a death record in the NSW Family History service saying he died in 1880:

  • Name:WEBB HENRY
  • Registration number: 9348/1880
  • Father's given name: JOHN
  • Mother's given name: MARIA
  • District: PARRAMATTA

But I have also found he died in 1921:

NSW Family History service shows this:

  • Name:WEBB HENRY S
  • Registration number: 6269/1921
  • Father's given name: 72 YEARS
  • Mother's given name: TAMWORTH
  • District: TAMWORTH

Can anyone explain what is going on here? Was the 1880 death record a mistake?

(I have updated with more details - specifically about his wife, and how FindAGrave links to his wife.)

Two Henry Webbs! The one you want is the one who died in 1880.  The other one might be a son, a grandson, or not related at all.

There is another Henry Webb, born in Alexandria in 1849 so likely to be the one who died in 1921.
New South Wales Family History - Births, Deaths and Marriages Search (https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search : 23 Apr 2024) Birth registration # 482/1849 V1849482 58
WEBB Henry, Father: Henry, Mother: Jane, District: GE (Alexandria)
Thank you for your suggestion. I have added a bit more detail to my question - specifically that the Henry who died in 1921 was married to Elizabeth Jones (well, according to FindAGrave).
While both entries may be the one you are after, the one with matching parents is a more likely candidate. In some cases it may be necessary to obtain a certificate to be sure as they contain more information. I'll have a dig and see what else I can find...

National Library Trove was forthcoming... just confuses the issue more.

"Family Notices" The Northern Daily Leader (Tamworth, NSW : 1921) 23 April 1921: 3. Web. 23 Apr 2024 <http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article104816066>.

THE FRIENDS of the late HENRY SAUNDERS WEBB are respectfully invited to attend his funeral to leave his late residence, Goonoo Goonoo at 8.30 this day, Saturday, arriving at St. Paul's Church 11 o'clock, thence to Church of England Cemetery, West Tamworth.

The other Henry Webb is also in Trove, so there are definitely two, the only match there seems to be the birth year and parents. Maybe the birth record matches this one and not Henry Sanders/Saunders (though the matching maiden name is usually a good link)?
"Family Notices" The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) 1 January 1880: 8. Web. 23 Apr 2024 <http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article28388871>.

THE FRIENDS of the late Mr. HENRY WEBB are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral ; to move from his late residence, 251, Goulburn-street, Surry-Hills, THIS (Thursday) MORNING; at 8 o'clock, for the Necropolis.

Edit: Necropolis refers to Rookwood Cemetery.

1871 marriage record 3160/1871 lists his name as Henry Sanden in the index at least. Might be a transcription error. All looks pretty good for 1921 to be the right death record but it is a pity there is not more information in the 1880 funeral notice.

Just found that the 1880 Trove notice is for yet another Henry Webb who died near the end of 1879:
WEBB HENRY 47/1880 AGE 61 YEARS DIED SYDNEY SYDNEY

Appears to be no death or funeral notice for the Henry S Webb who died 20 Aug 1880.
The Henry Webb buried on Thursday 1 January 1880 may have drowned in Sydney Cove on Tuesday 30 December 1879. If so, his wife at that time was named Jane, and he had a son called Alfred.

<ref>FOUND DROWNED. (1880, January 6). ''The Sydney Daily Telegraph (NSW : 1879 -1883)'', p. 3. Retrieved April 23, 2024, from National Library of Australia Trove [https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/238482873 238482873].</ref>
I think that's him! And looks like his wife's name is Jane and he is much older than my Henry. An unfortunate way to die, and maybe a case unresolved.

Thank you all for your input. I hope I can help someone else in this way.
