Help fixing a bio check report

A check on my profile Ohldag-1 gives the following warnings, which I do not understand. It may be as simple as an unwanted space, but I just don't see it. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Profile may be unsourced
  • Wrong level heading == Research note ==

You have 'Span' item before the Biography header that is only seen by editing the profile, so many people answering do not see that.  That is not an appropriate use of Span. Span should be used for one source that will be used with different pages, not for multiple citations where the span entry is not used. But Span is no longer recommended for use in wikitree.

That is one reason BioCheck is not recognizing it. If you want to 'hide' the references and group them together, there are other ways of doing it, but they are also not recommended

Bio Check uses the Biographies Help to determine the section names (those with two =), as well as the proper order.

Bio Check uses the Sources Help to identify sources. This states Directly "after stating a fact in the biography for which you have a source, surround the reference with these tags...". See also the section on Advanced Sourcing within that help. Also see Alternative Sourcing Methods and Style FAQ.

Hiding the sources inside the span has nothing to do with the Bio Check results. Bio Check expects sources to be inside the == Biography == as described in the Biography and Sources help. Also note that items inside the Research Notes are not sources for that profile.

The profile is definitely sourced.

The wrong level heading is due to a "s" missing from Note. Also the word note needs to be capitalized.

Fixed the "Research Notes" and found another typo, but the "Unsourced" warning does not go away.
Not sure but I think it might because you have "<!-- REFERENCES COLLECTED HERE TO AVOID CLUTTER IN THE BIOGRAPHY -->" and the info below it, ABOVE the Section header ==Biography==. The system might be interpreting that as an Unsourced notice

I believe Nancy is correct about the underlying cause of BioCheck not recognising the sources, although it is actually a bug. According to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:BioCheckHelp#Release_Notes, one of the "Known Problems" is "Named <ref> are not recognized when hidden inside a <span>"

OK. I checked a bunch of other profiles, and they all exhibit the same behavior. Must be quite recent, because I never noticed this message before (Either that, or my eyeglass prescription needs adjusting...) However, on one of the profiles I checked, I had a "== Note ==" section, and it also complains about a wrong level heading. Are there specific section names one has to have (aside from a Biography and Sources section) or others that cannot be used (such as "Resource note")?

According to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Biographies#Text_Sections, aside from the Biography and Sources headings, the only other level 2 headings allowed, both of which are optional, are "== Research Notes ==" and "== Acknowledgements ==". Anything else can be used as a heading as long as it is level 3 (so has 3 = signs at the start and end rather than just 2).

I don't know why Bio Check would mark it as unsourced (Kay might have a better idea), but...

  • Wrong level heading == Research note ==
This is wrong because it should say "Research Notes"  (with a big N and an 's').
