Hello Stephanie.

Despite the name is quite illegible in the document, John's father's name is Lewis, and his mother's name is Maria (Mariah).

John and Jane lived for a time, after getting married, in Ohio. They had a daughter named Virginia. Virginia was born in 1858 in Ohio.

Latter in time the family moved to Wirt Co., WV. The family was living there in 1870, In the 1870 Census Viginia is listed 11 y/o:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DTK7-MXZ

(The family is listed in lines 20-25)

Virginia died in 1924.

Certificate of death of Virginia:

This document supports all of the avobe said:

She was born in Ohio.

Her parents names are: John D. Ballard and Jane Davis.

In the 1880 Census John is not listed. See the family listed in lines 40-45 in the following document:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YB6-SJLJ

(Son James C. 12 y/o is listed J.C. 3 y/o in the 1870 Census).

In the 1870 Census is listed a daughter named Serenia, 5 y/o. Serenia is not listed in the 1880 Census.

Both of them (John D. Ballard and his daughter Serenia) died in 1879. See lines 6 and 16 in the following document:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QHK-Q3RG-NZCH

John D. 47, died from Consumption in June, and Serenia (Serena) 15, died from Typhoid fever in October.

The exact dates of death and names of parents are given in the document below, see the first two lines at the top of the page:

http://archive.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view2.aspx?FilmNumber=849406&ImageNumber=18

John D. Ballard died 27 June1879, he was the son of Lewis and Maria Ballard.

Serena (listed in this document Julia A. by mistake, same age and same "Desease or Cause of Death" in both documents) died 31 October 1879, she was the daughter of J.D. and Jane.

The informant listed in both records is Jane Ballard, respectively, wife and mother of the deceased.

I would never have gotten Lewis (or Louis) out of that. There's a Lucy down below that's pretty easy to read. It's also not Alfred, if we look at the August in the beginning of line 92.

It almost looks more like a Yulis or something, I wonder if the officiant just really didn't hear the name right.

But yeah, other sources seem like the way to go on this one.
