William was in the US Army Air Forces 9th Division 419 Bomber Squadron(service number 38166658) when he died in service over the straits of Dover in the European Area. He was awarded a posthumous purple heart medal and Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. Initially listed as "Missing in Action," his body was not recovered and the family were awarded an upright marble headstone memorial marker in 1966.

I added stickers for the Purple Heart and Air Medal.

Also added a WWII Veteran recognition sticker using the 453rd Bombardment Squadron, 323rd Bombardment Group.

The Headstone Application reference to the 419th Bombersqdn seems a bit odd since that squadron used B-17 bombers according to Wikipedia if I searched correctly

I did not add a Roll of Honor sticker.  It appears that William was not killed in a combat mission so he would fall in the Category: Died in Military Service instead of the KIA or MIA categories.  I am not sure I am reading the activity that was occurring when the B-26 bomber crashed.

Actually, he is listed as Missing in Action on the American Battlefield Monuments page:  https://www.abmc.gov/decedent-search/mcmath%3Dwilliam

He is memorialized at Cambridge American Cemetery.   Has anyone in the family been in touch with DPAA regarding his missing status?
