Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help, or if you want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up, or if you want to join the Notables Project and get a badge. You can j
oin the Notables Project by requesting membership in the  Notables Google Group.  Besides checking out the Notables Project page, don't forget to review the Requirements of Working on Profiles of Notables on WikiTree Page that has updated information. (For ideas on ways to connect unconnected people and branches, see also the Hints and Tips on the Connectors Chat page.)

Notables should fulfill the criteria to have at least one Wikipedia page in any language to qualify as a Notable. But an entry in the country's NATIONAL Who's Who or a NATIONAL Biography is also acceptable as well.

The Notables team will decide if a Living Notable's Profile can be made Public or not. That means the Notable must have at least 3  Wikipedia Pages in different languages. At least two Wikipedia pages in different languages must also include the name of at least one close or nuclear family member (Specifically parents, siblings, spouse or child). If the page should also happen to list grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins in the "other relatives" list, those would also be helpful.

Thanks Robynne! Just to avoid any confusion ... am I correct in understanding that "an entry in the country's NATIONAL Who's Who or a NATIONAL Biography" is only an acceptable alternative for non-Living Notables, and not for Living Notables?

Ian
Biographies dont usually get entered into those Books until after they have died.

So I would say that your understanding is correct.

We can wait for Scott or an Admin to confirm.

Rootstech is happening this weekend...
If I understand your question correctly, you're asking "what ways can a profile qualify for Notable status as a part of the project?" - Let me know if that's correct before I wind up the long wind-bag answer...

Thanks Robynne and Scott!

My question was more along the lines ... Can an entry in a National Who's Who be used as a substitute for Wikipedia to meet the eligibility criteria for Living Notabes?

I have since noticed the answer in your page Requirements for Profiles of Notables, which says: "NOTE: Alternatives such as a Dictionary of National Biography or establishing the Wikipedia Standards of Notability are not applicable to allow the viewing of a Living Notable."

The requirement that a Living Notable have at least three Wikipedia pages was a Community decision, as documented in the g2g discussion(s) at the time, not a Notables Project one.
It would also be a little difficult to find a Dictionary of National Biography, or a National Who's Who, in more than one language that also mentions a nuclear family member - hence the Wikipedia page being a sole requirement only for Living Notables.

I have a little request for the Notables Project.  A living person who has been in several UK television programmes with a Wikitree category (which I happen to be trying to populate), and a few movies, and is super-easy to connect.

His name is Ian Ogilvy and he is the son of Aileen (Raymond) Ogilvy who was the ex-wife of Sir John Mills.  Her second marriage was to advertising exec David Ogilvy who doesn't have a profile but does have a Wikipedia page in 22 languages, for some reason.

Categories for Ian (besides England Actors, Television Actors, Film Actors) would be I Claudius, Agatha Christie's Marple, The Two Ronnies, Upstairs Downstairs and The Avengers.

He was in updated versions of The Saint (lead role in Return of The Saint) and Maigret, the categories technically relate to the 60's versions but could be widened.

If his profile is going to be private while he is still living then it doesn't need much detail now, here's a birth record so there's a source.  And his IMDB filmography.

I was going to mention his Wikipedia page being in 13 languages but that doesn't look so impressive next to his father.  But it meets your project's criteria, right?

I won't take it personally if this can't be done for whatever reason, I'm just trying to fill up the tree and some categories.

That's all for now, thanks!

Stephen, Ian Ogilvy definitely qualifies to have a profile as a Living Notable under WikiTree's Living Notables policy. That means it can have limited opening to the public but must be managed by a Project.

If you create the profile, the Notables Project will be able to co-manage it and arrange for it to be opened. These are the guidelines for creating Notable profiles, you'll also find the Project Management Request form on that page for requesting management by the Notables Project.

I won't make profiles for any living people without their express permission.  But I see your project creates many and I've no objection to that.  I'm just making a suggestion of a worthy candidate.  However...

I was going to suggest Penelope Wilton (wife of Ian Holm, and a cast member of Doctor Who) but it turns out she already has a private profile connected to her mother.  I guess there's not much point categorising/connecting living people who are invisible.

So anyone I suggest might already have a private profile connected in ways I'm not aware of.  That does make it a bit pointless making suggestions like this.  I see why it is not a good idea.  I shall just concern myself with the deceased going forward, and leave the living to you guys.

I have sent Trusted List requests from the project account for access to the profiles. It is a requirement on WikiTree for non-Open profiles of Notables to be managed by a project, so we'll work with the profile manager to bring these under a project's co-management. Thanks for pointing them out. As you mention, profiles of living Notables should "never" be created without a project being involved first, although it does happen from time to time. The important part is to ensure we get them under project management as soon as we can, or else there's the potential with a private profile that a duplicate can be far too easily created.
And since Aileen's profile is not open, I have also asked for Trusted List access so that I can look into adding the Notable you have suggested. Thanks.

It is interesting that even Aileen is a Notable, so there's a whole large group of them you have mentioned. I'll let you know how things come out.

Thanks Scott, you usually get these things sorted (as with Mrs Pancho Gonzalez).

Actors do tend to marry each other a lot and breed more actors, I guess that's the social circles they move in.  On balance it tends to make connecting them easier even though you sometimes run into the odd stumbling block.

Perhaps you might take a look at the profile of sports journalist Ringgold Lardner, which I came across a while back trying to connect another deceased celebrity.  Totally locked and invisible, looks like an inactive family member managing it.  I made profiles for his deceased wife and son to bypass him, which still can't connect to him.  His living granddaughter (no profile) married my target, Fred Hellerman, but I found another connection route anyway.

Actor Ron Harper has passed away. He may not be a household name today, but if you were a young boy during a very narrow timeframe (specifically, September to December 1974) he may have been one of your childhood heroes. Harper played astronaut Alan Virdon on the short-lived television version of Planet of the Apes. Did anyone besides me have an Alan Virdon action figure? Should have kept mine - one just sold for $90 on eBay!

He is a former Portuguese prime minister. and former president of European Commission.

He has Wikipedia pages in 68 languages (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Manuel_Barroso). Added Scott and Notables project as manager of the profile.

Thanks.

Regarding this person

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wellesley-15 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_Wellesley%2C_8th_Duke_of_Wellington)

It shows he has a private son in Wikitree. I want to add this Notable son (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Wellesley,_9th_Duke_of_Wellington ), but since there are several sons of Valerian, I don't know if the private son is for this one I want to add, or a different son. I want to avoid creating a duplicate. Would it be better to have that existing one checked, and if it's for Charles, then have a Notable manager make visible, or should I go ahead and create a new private person, and when a Notable manager makes it visible, they would merge if appropriate?

Related to this, I'm confused about the process of creating Living Notables that meet the criteria. The form that we're supposed to use to request a profile be made a Living Notable assumes that the profile has been created. But other guidance seems to discourage creating profiles of living non-related persons. "profiles of living Notables should 'never' be created without a project being involved first".

There are a handful of Living Notables I'd like to have added, and am happy to write their Bio's but I'm not clear on the process, since I see some conflicting guidance. I normally avoid messing with living people at all, but in the case of the handful I have in mind, adding the Living Notables will make some interesting tree connections.

The Main criteria for a Living Notable are as follows - Wikipedia pages in a minimum of 3 languages, plus at least one nuclear  family member listed.

Also Many of the Living Notables profiles that are currently open, were actually created back before 2018 when the new Privacy rules went into effect.

I personally find it much easier to create profiles for Notables who have passed.

The Notables team are required to be made manager of these profiles, but if you created the profile, they are open to keeping you on the trusted list so you can still access the profile if you so choose.

I have a number of Notable Profiles for which I am still on the trusted list because I created the profile, even if I am no longer the PM.
Instead of asking about this on G2G, why don't you send a Private Message to the PM, who is there specifically for this sort of question?  You shouldn't really go ahead and create a new 'private person' in the hope that they will be merged later on.  Ask first.

The profile of Reggie Miller, famous NBA basketball player, will be connected when the links update tonight. This also connects his other two siblings who are also famous, Cheryl and Keith.

Actress Barbara Rush died Easter Sunday at the age of 97. She is primarily remembered for her Golden Globe nominated role in the 1953 film It Came from Outer Space. She was also a long-time cast member on Payton Place and All My Children. Younger audiences may recognize her as Grandma Camden of 7th Heaven. However, I remember her best as the beautiful villain on Batman, one of my all-time favorite childhood TV shows.
