Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help, or if you want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up, or if you want to join the Notables Project and get a badge. You can j
oin the Notables Project by requesting membership in the  Notables Google Group.  Besides checking out the Notables Project page, don't forget to review the Requirements of Working on Profiles of Notables on WikiTree Page that has updated information. (For ideas on ways to connect unconnected people and branches, see also the Hints and Tips on the Connectors Chat page.)

Notables should fulfill the criteria to have at least one Wikipedia page in any language to qualify as a Notable. But an entry in the country's NATIONAL Who's Who or a NATIONAL Biography is also acceptable as well.

The Notables team will decide if a Living Notable's Profile can be made Public or not. That means the Notable must have at least 3  Wikipedia Pages in different languages. At least two Wikipedia pages in different languages must also include the name of at least one close or nuclear family member (Specifically parents, siblings, spouse or child). If the page should also happen to list grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins in the "other relatives" list, those would also be helpful.

Thanks Robynne! Just to avoid any confusion ... am I correct in understanding that "an entry in the country's NATIONAL Who's Who or a NATIONAL Biography" is only an acceptable alternative for non-Living Notables, and not for Living Notables?

Ian
Biographies dont usually get entered into those Books until after they have died.

So I would say that your understanding is correct.

We can wait for Scott or an Admin to confirm.

Rootstech is happening this weekend...
If I understand your question correctly, you're asking "what ways can a profile qualify for Notable status as a part of the project?" - Let me know if that's correct before I wind up the long wind-bag answer...

Thanks Robynne and Scott!

My question was more along the lines ... Can an entry in a National Who's Who be used as a substitute for Wikipedia to meet the eligibility criteria for Living Notabes?

I have since noticed the answer in your page Requirements for Profiles of Notables, which says: "NOTE: Alternatives such as a Dictionary of National Biography or establishing the Wikipedia Standards of Notability are not applicable to allow the viewing of a Living Notable."

The requirement that a Living Notable have at least three Wikipedia pages was a Community decision, as documented in the g2g discussion(s) at the time, not a Notables Project one.
It would also be a little difficult to find a Dictionary of National Biography, or a National Who's Who, in more than one language that also mentions a nuclear family member - hence the Wikipedia page being a sole requirement only for Living Notables.

Iris Apfel, my queen and style icon, died today in Palm Beach, Florida at the age of 102. Her status as a living notable needs to be updated.

by Melissa Arjona G2G6 Mach 5 (56.2k points)
Her privacy and death date have been updated.

Thanks! Can you add her husband, Carl? She's PPP so I can't add him.

Sure - no problem. He's added now. Thanks.
PPP is removed. Don't hesitate pointing out residual PPPs that need to be removed.

Recently connected both Mitchell and Kenyon Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon. Working on John Pye and his Brother Charles Pye, who might also be classed as a notable , both were engravers. Their Father is also mentioned on Wikipedia but that biography only has two paragraphs. He was also an engraver (for Soho Mint). I am struggling with the Pye's dont think either have children but both were married  found marriage of one.

For Brits of a certain age, I've just been working on the profile of Tony Hart and while looking at the Wikipedia page of his programme Hartbeat I found out that the actor playing the bumbling caretaker "Mr Bennett" passed away last month, and his death was only announced a few days ago (on X).

Perhaps not notable enough to be notable but I thought I should mention it somewhere (I haven't seen it in the usual places where obscure obituaries show up) and here seemed as good a place as any.  His son Tom is also a jobbing actor.

I'm on the fence on whether this profile for Dr. Garrett Brodhead Linderman deserves a Notable sticker or not, and would like the opinion of an experienced Notables project member. He has no entry in Wikipedia, but he was in several biographical compendiums around the turn of the last century. I did not originally create the profile, but I've begun cleaning it up, and am about to write an original biographical sketch (similar to the one I did for his notable brother Henry Richard Linderman ) to replace the one that is copied verbatim from an old book.

The reason I'm on the fence is because I know that often the published biographies from the Gilded Age era were promotional in nature, and I don't know which are considered impartial. I know that some are promotional, for this Linderman family at least, because I have the family history papers of the son of Henry Richard Linderman, and among them are his marked up drafts of biographies of his father that are extremely close to those appearing in those old biographical compendiums, and his writing style and content appears in some of the published biographies of some of his close relatives..

From the information on the profile, it's difficult to say. There are two books cited, but since I don't have them to read, and neither is solely on him, it's difficult to say that there is enough material to indicate notable status. I could read his biography like, "Became a doctor, helped some people, changed careers, became a businessman, failed to become a politician, and died." - or - I could go all out as the obituary obviously did. As you suggest, the obits of that era for people who had some affluence tended to be flowery and over the top, but there is some potential merit in some of the things he did that might be considered notable if we could only separate the truth from the fiction. If we could find a more impartial source, as you suggest above, then maybe we could get a clearer picture of who he really was.

A possibly notable thing he did was inject funds needed to rescue Bethlehem Iron, and then act as a significant figure in its leadership as that company's importance increased. He was one of the top two largest shareholders (the other being Wharton), Director, and General Manager. He was an active, though not famous figure in the US iron and steel industry during the time when that industry became globally significant. After his death, leadership of the company passed to his son, who oversaw the transition of the company from Bethlehem Iron into Bethlehem Steel. Many of his contemporaries with whom he worked closely, though not always amicably at Bethlehem Iron are in Wikipedia,  and are notable; Robert H. Sayre, John F. Fritz, and Joseph Wharton. Linderman is mentioned more than a few times in the book "Joseph Wharton: Quaker Industrial Pioneer". I don't know if that's sufficient to being "notable".

He's one of those gray area ones. Typically shareholders are not considered Notable unless they were known for something specific, like engineering a corporate takeover of some major company. He acted in his own and the company's best interests, which is what you would want from a good shareholder, and as a majority shareholder, he used his influence to make high-level business decisions for the company, but there are many shareholders out there just like him who wouldn't qualify just on that set of criteria. However, depending on what decisions he made or if he was the sole or at least leading decider on certain critical decisions that changed the face of the company, then perhaps that would be enough. It's just so hard to tell, as typically for the corporate world, there has to be something in their biography that sets them apart from the typical corporate leader or shareholder in a way that someone can say "that was amazing". However, I try not to be the sole decider myself on these things, so if others want to chime in, I'd like to hear what others might say as well.

The Notables Project has updated its project maintenance categories to reflect connectable project managed notables. Please review the profiles in the category Notables Needing to be Connected All of these notables will have deceased relatives where a possible connection to the Big Tree may be found.  Additional profiles will be added to the category.

Click on the number of current connections under "unconnected notables" at the top of the profiles to identify deceased connections on the private tree to start. If you are able to connect, please leave a comment on the notable' profile so that the category can be removed. Even if you can't connect, adding additional profiles will help get closer to making a connection.

Cute idea, but we'd have to base it either around the actors who were closest to the animals, or perhaps their trainers, or possibly their real owners. Possible though.
How about lead actor?
Lead actor would work. Or like Timmy and Lassie, while it could be argued that Timmy was not the top billing star, he was the star who worked most closely with Lassie.
In theory, you could conceivably add in animated dogs too, like Scooby Doo, Dynomutt, Huckleberry Hound, and others. The voice actors that brought them to life could be a part of the challenge as well.
I purposefully did not walk down the animated road of dogs. I feel it's probably a separate audience that would make this list too long.

Vernor Vinge died March 20th. He was a sci-fi writer and developed the idea of a technology-based "singularity" when AI outpaces humans, and wrote some of the first stories on virtual and augmented reality. He was 79. He has Wikipedia pages in 31 languages.

by Rob Neff G2G6 Pilot (136k points)
I didn't find an existing profile, so I've created a starter for him.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Vinge-40
I've also added some family to him, but have not yet found a connection to the Global Tree.
I might be able to connect him through his ex-wife, but it's a long connection of profiles not yet on WikiTree and I'd rather do it through his own family if I can manage.
Looks like someone found a connection for him. Thanks!
Thanks Scott and whoever else worked on this!

Famous actress Rebecca Ferguson (starring as Lady Jessica in the Dune films, she's in Mission Impossible, also starring in the tv series The Silo) has a profile under "Ferguson Sundström-1" in case anyone wants to take it over for notables or whatever. I've added parents, grandparents and great-grandparents on her Swedish side but nothing on her British side. She has a Wikipedia page in 45 different languages.

I have proposed a merge of Tony Booth (Booth-13048, orphaned profile), who died in 2017, and Living Booth (Booth-1780).  The latter appears to also be the private father of Cherie (Booth) Blair CBE KC (Booth-1730).  When the merge is completed, the manager of the private profile will hopefully agree that the merged profile should be made a notable.  Tony Booth has Wikipedia pages in 12 languages, which certainly qualifies him for WikiTree notability.
