What's a Watchdog?

Did you know that while we all wiki there are people in the background keeping the tree safe, productive, and friendly?

Today the Wednesday Watchdogs are on duty.  We are a team of members who work closely together to monitor many areas of activity on WikiTree.  At least one of us is on duty at all times, every hour of the day.  You don't hear about us often, but we're always around.

If a hacker were to begin doing damage to our beloved tree, the Watchdogs defend

If unexpected technical problems arise, we get there before they escalate

We deal with SPAM posted on G2G so that you don't have to

We promote healthy merges with correct directions and LNABs to make the tree better for everyone

There are many more things we do that can't be posted here (need to know basis so we can keep our edge over would be damage-doers).  Needless to say, it can be very exciting at times!

Just as important as guarding the tree is our other main duty... to be loyal and helpful to our WikiTree family members.  It doesn't matter if you have been here for years or are a brand new member as of today, we are your friends as well as cousins :)  When you need to you can give the Watchdogs a whistle and we'll come running.  We don't bite (sorry, couldn't help it).  When a Watchdog or any other friendly WikiTree Ranger sends you a message you can help them to help you by responding as promptly as possible.  Follow up on suggestions they give or make corrections that are recommended.

We are always looking for friendly, detail oriented members who wish to protect and promote the health of WikiTree.  To volunteer, please check out the Rangers Project today!

Great post. Thanks, Keith!

We always need more help on the Ranger teams.
Thanks for this post, I think that many people forget that the reason Wikitree is a free site, is because of all the wonderful volunteer activities that keep Wikitree safe and sane.

Be very wary of Kieth as he is the only watchdog wearing a spiked Collar.  Really (not).  Nice post Kieth!

Very nice, Keith.  Our unsung heroes...Perhaps a song is in order?  :)
Thanks to all the watchdogs that keep our tree safe. You are appreciated!

I want to help Strenthen up inter-communications & security for our site. I love helping build a "go to" place that was already awesome before I got here. :) JPVIV

Keith, you have a magic keyboard - you always say such wonderful things that are GREAT messages, have EXCELLENT helpful information, and are ultimately SUPPORTIVE, but this time you have really outdone yourself!

For anyone who's interested, this morning I kept track of all merges that were completed during my Ranger shift (merges include LNAB changes).  Here are the results:

  • 28 done correctly and bios cleaned up
  • 28 done correctly but bios not cleaned up
  • 7 LNAB changes where bios not cleaned up
  • 1 extra bad bio after merge - someone took the trouble to make section headings for each of about a half dozen merges and put all the individual bios/sources under those headings - the only description is an incredibly well organized mess!!!

"We all make mistakes"

I sympathize with the person organizing all the sections - a lot of work from someone who is loving WikiTree, and if I knew what profile, I'd go to the changes Tab and thank them.

Looking back a couple of years, I might have done the same thing (short memory these days).

The main thing is wanting to do it right - everything else is just details of learning what that is.
