Up and running for some time has been a sub-project called

African Ancestry in Australia

Its mission being to:

  • To collect in one place information and resources to assist in building and documenting the history and genealogies for those from Australia with African ancestry.

I have done a lot of research on transported convicts of African ancestry in the 19th century and also emigrants who chose to come. The work done so far can be seen via the link.  If you would like to get involved in this sub-project or to know more about it please do not hesitate to register your interest.

Hi Shoshanah,

Sorry not able to join your project but Anderson-13523 intersects with my family tree, and will be of interest to your project. Reportly an free African American from the United States who emigrated to the Australian colonies in 1839.

Good luck and great project, Peter

Awesome, I found the profile that I think you must be referring to: John Wesley Anderson.  I have now added him to the project.  What a fascinating biography.  The DNA info is very interesting.

Thank you so much for replying to the post Peter.

My ancestor, [Lewis-47820|Charles Francis Lewis (abt.1819-1915)] should be of interest. We believe that he was of African/American descent, born in Rhode Island, and ended up on the goldfields in Windeyer NSW, emigrated 1835? Numerous descendants in Australia, all with small percentages of African DNA.
