Hi, I've found the following duplicate categories. Should it be merged?

Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Province de Québec, 1763-1791

Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Province of Québec 1763-1791

Merci!

Shouldn't the 2nd one be an alias for the 1st one?

I suppose that you can add a "Parallel category hierarchies in other languages Example: Coaticook

I'm not 100% certain about this, so it might be worthwhile to add Quebec and Categorization as tags on this post. I think that you need to hear from Danielle Liard on this.

I like the Coaticook example of "Parallel category hierarchies in other languages".
There is a Spanish example: Entre Ríos, Argentina. The accent of the "i" in Rios is subtle but makes a lot of difference if you search in Spanish records.

It makes sense to me that the categories are recognised as completely different languages.

I look forward to Danielle Liard's opinion.
Each regional project will decide on their own guidelines. I will not comment on Canada.

In the Argentina sub-project I support the English/Spanish parallel categories for the high level categories such as provinces (or states). For the location categories below that I prefer all the category names in Spanish. Example: Federación, Entre Ríos

Thank you Vicky, have set them to merge, we only want a single landing level category for this part of the world.

Thank you Danielle, "we only want a single landing level category" seems like a good approach.
Rename (not merge) is preferred, merge requires more manual input and is not checked as often as Rename and Delete.
right, have to remember that Margaret, thanks, have changed it.
