Hi Wikitreers,

I believe we have the same person as mentioned in the 106th New York Roster per his service mentioned:

IRISH, V I L A S E.—Age, 20 years. Enlisted, August 15, 1864, at Colton, to serve one year; mustered in as private, Co. F, August 16, 1864; absent, at recruiting depot, at muster out of company.

Before we create a new profile for him as a veteran of the 106th we first must discover if he is the same veteran?

Needs collaboration

Thank you

Note: Name seems unique

I believe the two men (the one in the 106th and the 92nd) are two different men with same names. The Vilas in the 92nd was discharged for disability April 21, 1862 at first I thought he might of transferred to the 106th because by 1864 he would be about 20 yrs of age. So likely going to create the new profile and place in research notes eventually regarding the possible conflation

The Vilas Irish that Patricia found is listed in the 1890 Veterans Schedules of the U.S. Census:

He is reflected as serving in Co. F, 92nd New York Infantry, and Co. D, 11th New York.

The New York, U.S., Town Clerks' Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca. 1861-1865, at ancestry.com has an entry for him:

Vilas Edsil Irish - residence of South Colton, St. Lawrence, New York - born December 23, 1843, in Colton - Private - Co. D, 11th Cavalry - enlisted August 2, 1864 - mustered August 12, 1864 - enlisted at Colton - white - bounty of $300 - single - son of Smyton and Emily Irish - farmer - wounded while on picket at Germantown, Tennessee - discharged of disability - present post office address Colton, St. Lawrence, New York

Hi Roger,

The comment I made was for actually an answer to Patricia’s question but I am leaning towards two men same area different persons. Maybe related at best? One being 18 and the other 20 yrs of age. The military records show a different type of service for them during the civil war. It’s a bit of a puzzle though. laugh

His age is right for the son of Smiton G. and Emily Irish, who married Sarah Josephine Grandy.

He registered for military service in 1862.

At the 1850 Census he lived at Parishville, St. Lawrence, New York, and in 1870 at Potsdam, St. Lawrence, New York in the household of Cortese Irish, if this is the correct man.
