Multilingual User interface available?

Question

Hi,

I am Dutch so my native language is Dutch. I have thus a lot of dutch speaking family members in my tree. For some of them i added their email address:

1) to have support for their part of the tree. Some of them have extensive familiy tree's elsewhere

2) to transfer control in case i cease to exist

None of them took the opportunity 'because it is in english'. Isn't it a pity that wikitree will miss large numbers of profiles because of this?

Or does it already exist and am I a bad reader?

Hi Peter. I haven't tried this myself and can't guarantee it will work 100%, but a possibility is to use live page translation in the Google Chrome browser. See

Hi Jim,

Creative answer. I tried it and it seems to work although some of the translations wpould not be my first pick.

I had to update Chrome to the latest version and then told chrome to translate english pages into dutch. In my case that did not happen automatically so i had to activate it manually on each new page. But still, it worked!

Now i have to force my family members to either

1) still learn proper english

2) learn how to deal with chrome

Please note they live in the 'Apple ecosystem' and these people are often strongly anto Google.

In summary: it is a workeable solution but it will probably not attrack a lot of the not english speaking genealogists

Thank you for the measured response, Peter. Unfortunately if I remember correctly the version of page translation in Apple Safari would be a disaster for this, because unlike Chrome it translates the input fields as well. So if your family members used it and edited a biography that was originally in English say, it would be turned into Safari's version of Dutch!

Firefox now offers translation, and it's not from Google or Microsoft, so it should be acceptable to your Apple-using friends.

Thanks for the reply. Indeed a possibilty. I fear it will not convince my relatives to dive into Wikitree as they are fairly ICT illiterate.

I was thinking along the functionality in Wikipedia which can have a fully dutch UI and makes you feel very comfortable.

I did some numbers research (market research)

1,5 billion people speak english as first or second language (10% of world population)

So 90% or 14,5 billion people are non english speaking

I do not know how many of them are interested in genalogy but assume something like 0,1%.

Its their 'private' family tree's we are missing and that is a lot of tree's

O, ik ben het er van harte mee eens. Ik heb jarenlang betoogd dat WikiTree meertalig zou moeten zijn. Voor mij, zelfs voor mensen die goed Engels kunnen lezen en schrijven, maar het niet als eerste taal hebben, geeft het feit dat WikiTree alleen in het Engels is, de boodschap: "Je bent hier niet welkom." Voor mij is dat niet de boodschap die een website die iedereen in de wereld hoopt op te nemen in één wereldwijde stamboom, zou moeten uitdragen.

Helaas zijn de machthebbers erg resistent tegen het meertalig maken van WikiTree. Als je terugkijkt in oude threads, zul je zien dat het onderwerp tientallen keren ter sprake is gebracht en dat er nooit iets aan is gedaan.

Dus voor mij is het gebruik van vertaling in een browser (of vertaalsites) niet echt een oplossing, maar meer een work-around om te gebruiken totdat WikiTree meertalig is (wat naar mijn mening uiteindelijk moet worden wat het hoopt te zijn, en de huidige weerstand vertraagt alleen maar het onvermijdelijke).

 Why is this issue being blocked? If Wikitree will not 'internationalize' it will eventually auto-destruct by default. The tool and the idea behind it deserve a better perspective.

Ik ben blij te horen dat het uitstekend Nederlands is, maar niet van mij, maar van Google Translate. Enige tijd geleden, toen ik samenwerkte met de leden van het Dutch Roots Project om overgrootouders toe te voegen, te verbinden en te vinden voor Nederlandse notabelen, vertelden een paar mensen me dat ze dachten dat ik echt Nederlands was, dus blijkbaar doet het goed werk. In ieder geval met talen die nauw verwant zijn.*

Ik heb begrepen dat het leiderschapsteam vindt dat het meertalig maken van WikiTree te veel werk zou zijn. Het is waar dat WikiTree is gebaseerd op de software die wordt gebruikt door Wikipedia, en Wikipedia is al jaren meertalig. Maar er zijn veel aanpassingen aan de code gedaan om WIkiTree beter te laten werken, en zoals ik het begrijp, zouden die aanpassingen aan de code moeten worden toegevoegd voor elke nieuwe taal die aan Wikitree wordt toegevoegd. Zoals ik het begrijp, zou elke taaleditie een geheel nieuwe site zijn.

Er was ook enige bezorgdheid dat het niet mogelijk zou zijn om één enkele database te delen tussen de taalsites, dus in plaats van één wereldboom zouden we een boom hebben voor elke taal. (Ik heb niet meer geprogrammeerd sinds ik een paar eenvoudige programma's in BASIC heb geschreven op mijn Coleco Adam toen ik op de universiteit zat, dus als je meer details wilt horen over het betrokken werk, probeer dan de tech-tag aan je vraag toe te voegen. Dat zou de aandacht van Chris moeten trekken.)

* Ik heb erover nagedacht om Google Translate te gebruiken om al mijn G2G-berichten elke week in een andere taal te plaatsen, als onderdeel van mijn algemene wens om duidelijk te maken dat mensen die elke taal spreken welkom zijn op WikiTree. Hoewel ik er helemaal niet zeker van ben dat het net zo goed zou werken om te vertalen wat ik schrijf in het Turks, Chinees of Tagalog als in het Nederlands.

Okay, in English:

1. If you look at your original post, you should see a black "Answer this post" button, and beside it, links that says "edit", "close", "hide", and "comment". (Only you will see these choices, because you started the thread. Everybody else only sees "flag" and "comment".)
2. Click on "edit", and scroll down to the bottom. Near the bottom, you should see text that says, "Surnames/Tags (use underscores for spaces, e.g. van_dam, new_netherland)." and after that, a box that currently has "improvements user_friendly language global_outreach".
3. In that box, move your cursor to after "global_outreach", enter a space, and type tech .
4. Click on the "Save Changes" button.

Right now, you have four tags on this thread. I can't remember whether the maximum number of tags you can use is five or six, but you can add "tech" without going over the limit.

Thanks Greg, Tried it. I got the reply that the 'Tech' tag is obsolete (see below) and that i should place the item in the category 'WikiTree Tech'. Which i manage to do. We will see.
