How to create high-quality Hungarian profiles?

Hello Hungary Project Members!  Helló Magyarország Projekt tagok!

I joined WikiTree 5 weeks ago. I am creating profiles for the Orgovan surname, and many of them are from Hungary. I do not speak Hungarian, but I do speak Google, Bing, databases and Excel. I connected with Tibor Majláth via private message, and he was incredibly helpful getting me started. Thank you, Tibor! I do not want to wear out my welcome with Tibor, so I’m seeking help from a broader audience.

First, can someone review (some of?) the ~15 Hungarian Orgovan-related profiles I created and give me feedback? I’m unsure about naming conventions and proper interpretation and citing of church records. I want the profiles I create to meet or exceed community standards. I have another ~40 Hungarian profiles to create. I want to leverage what I can learn from the first set. I’m doing everything in English. Is that even acceptable? Are there best practices for naming people who emigrate, i.e., born István Orgóvan and die as Steve Orgovan?

Second, what is best way to ask for help about specific people when I am stuck? For example, I have a cluster of unconnected profiles who are descendants of Orgovan-43. He and his wife were reportedly born in Hungary according to their immigration paperwork, but I cannot find any of their records in Hungary. Also, I have several hundred people who are descendants of Orgován-56 born 1792. His father’s name is listed on his baptism record, but I haven’t learned anything else about him.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Vince

Helló Magyarország Projekt tagok!

5 hete csatlakoztam a WikiFához.

Előre is köszönöm a segítséget!

Vince

Hi Vince, welcome on board! We badly need people working on Hungarian profiles, so any work you can put into this is more than welcome.

I think the most important is to cite - if possible - primary sources. Make sure that you back up family legends with a birth record or so - you may find surprising discoveries.

Some Hungarian specific points:

  • Use names at birth. Unfortunately, there is no sensible way to include names for married women, such as "Kovács Lászlóné" other than mentioning it in the bio. If Tóth Piroska married Kovács László, then only add "Kovács" as a current family name if she appears in records as Kovács Piroska.
  • For family names with predicates, skip the predicate in the LNAB field. E.g. for nagykárolyi Károlyi, LNAB=Károlyi, Current name=Károlyi de Nagy-Károly.
  • Use historically accurate location names. Ideally, categorization helps to keep track of the different locations.
I collected some useful resources on the Hungary resources page. Feel free to expand it.

Hi Vincent, have you considered setting up a One Name Study here?

Hi Vincent, you will definitely find Andras and his family probably for another couple generations back at this link:

Here's his baptismal record in the Hungary Reformed church with his parents' names.

I built some of the Orgován tree back for you on FamilySearch. If you need help adding them, watch the Sourcerers  app videos. Or I can help you. Make sure to spell the ancestors' name as Orgován with the accent. In America, they obviously didn't use that diacretic so that's accurate.

(Profile-page comments eat whitespace, so I'm putting this here instead of Rose's page.)

Great find, J!

Andrew’s profile was a great read. You might consider putting his given names at birth (Andras) in the name field and Andrew in preferred name or other names. Since he is an emigrant he should be categorised accordingly. And potentially some stickers (if you like them), eg a migrating ancestor sticker.

You might also like to check out the completed profiles checklist at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Completeness_Checklist

Just some ideas…
