Shouldn't the category be changed?

odd question... there is a 1870 census for Manitoba, shouldn't there be a 1870 category, not a 1871?

Should the 1871 Census of Canada category be changed to 1870? (even though the citation on the profile states 1871) or are there 2 census for Manitoba.  Library of Canada states there is only 1870 for Manitoba and that 1871 is for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec.

I would agree with you. Having said that, I'm not sure why we have categories at all for censuses -- I'm not seeing the value of it.

Manitoba joined Canada officially on 15 Jul 1870. According to Library & Archives Canada, the 1870 census of Manitoba was begun on 27 Oct 1870.

Although Manitoba was a province when the federal census was taken in 1871, the province is not included in that federal census. The Census of Manitoba, 1870 is to be consulted when researching residents of this province for the decade from 1871 to 1881.  Source: https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1870/Pages/about-census.aspx

Thank you, but I don't think it answers my question.
hi Kathryn, the census of Canada 1871 is for all of Canada that year, outside of Manitoba.  So no, would not change the parent census name to only reflect Manitoba date of census.  The cateogry of Manitoba census however could be corrected to 1870.
