2023 WikiTree Challenge 8: Our research for mitoYDNA has completed [closed]

Hello WikiTreers!

For each WikiTree Challenge we partner with another group in the worldwide genealogy community. Together we research connections for seven starting people chosen by our partner.

Challenge #8 is a unique one! Our partner is mitoYDNA, a non-profit formed from a group of collaborative genetic genealogists (many of them leading WikiTreers). It's a place to upload your Y-DNA and mitochondrial DNA results for matching and analysis. Like WikiTree, mitoYDNA is crowdsourced, free, and accessible to all, now and into the future.

Our week began Thursday, May 4, at noon EDT (4pm UTC) and will end May 11, at noon EDT. You don't need any genetic genealogy skills to participate. This is not about DNA analysis, it's a genealogy research challenge. Everyone is welcome to join us.

Comment below the relevant ancestor below if you make a new connection to the global tree, have questions, or need help with something. (Comments at the top will be hidden once read.)

Note: We will score this challenge differently. Usually, we count seven degrees of connections for the seven starting people. Here we plan to count all direct-line maternal or paternal connections (matching the DNA of the starting person) no matter their distance, e.g. for Ocaan Ro you will be following the direct paternal lines, so sons of sons of sons.

Ocaan Ro was born about 0970 in Ulster, Ireland. You can look at the list of his DNA descendants to find a starting point to continue his lines directly downwards. This Y-DNA line which is currently believed to extend back 30 generations to 970 AD has 5 test takers.

I was able to connect Ocaan to another point in the tree: His 26th Great Grandson (whew!) Theodore's wife Martha Thomas was already in WikiTree but nobody had made a profile for Theodore yet.

Here's the new path between Martha Thomas and Ocaan Ro.

Way to go Erin! Thanks!!
Just added Lucinda Stilson as Steven's mother. It appears that she probably died a month after he was born. All siblings are listed as "half."
How sad Frances!

Katherine (Roet) Swynford was born about 1350 in Picardie, France. You can look at the list of her DNA descendants to find a starting point to continue her lines directly downwards. This mtDNA line is believed to extend back to 1350.

Katherine is the 19th great grandmother of Danny, me!

I connect Katherine's 5xgreat-granddaughter, Elizabeth Butler(-30069)'s husband Edward Trye-45 who is his father John Trye-8 already on the Globel tree.  Note that Richard III,(York-1245) King of England is Elizabeth Butler's first cousin fourth removed
Katherine is my 18th g-grandmother
Way to go Chris! First bounty of the challenge.
Newby question here, what's a bounty award,  I didn't see mention of a bounty in the description of this challenge :/

Great question Danny! We give special bounty points for several things. The connection bounty you see is for the first new connection to the global tree on Katherine (Roet) Swynford's lines. There is more about this on the help page.

I think I have knocked the brick wall down they had a son Wilfred Ignatius Wilberforce-59 which is already in the global tree
Hello Mindy, I can't connect his children to Henry William Wilberforce-9 because it is a Project Protection profile.  Please could you sort it out for me?
I can't connect Mary Florence Wilberforce-98, Ambrose Newman Wilberforce-99 and Agnes Everilda Mary Wilberforce-100 to their father Henry William Wilberforce-9 again because it is a project protection profile.
I can't connect John William Wilberforce-101, Arthur Henry Wilberforce-102 and Henry Edward Wilberforce-103 to their father Henry William Wilberforce because of the project protection profile.
I can connect those Chris. Thanks!
The source on John William Wilberforce-101 doesn't list his parents.

Catherine (Unknown) Strutt was born about 1520 in Suffolk, England. You can look at the list of her mtDNA descendants to find women that continue her lines directly downwards. This mtDNA line is believed to extend back 17 generations. This line is significant because it is rare to be able to trace back that many generations on a matrilineal line without belonging to nobility.

It looks like we are doing bounty for the first connection..... I created a profile that ended up being a duplicate and once you approve the merge, it will connect this line to the tree again.  Skinner-11271 into Skinner-706.  I know this week is a little different, so let me know if this is incorrect.

Nice work Donna! Yes, we are still counting the first new connection to the global tree.

Ivar is the 30th great grandfather of Danny

Hello cousin! We seem to match up on many of these challenge profiles!
Just learned that Ivar is my 30th great-grandfather, through my maternal grandmother's line........

I've connected Ivar to a different part of the tree, even though it's quite distant!

Ivar's direct paternal line 27th great grandson Benjamin Franklin McDonald already existed in WikiTree, and I created his wife Elizabeth Taylor so she could be connected to the already existing profile of her father Thurman Taylor.

Congrats again Erin! Thank you for giving me the new profile ID and the existing one you connected it to!

John Thorpe was born about 1608 in England. You can look at the list of his YDNA descendants to find a starting point to continue his male lines directly downwards. This Y-DNA line extends back 11 generations to about 1608 and has 9 test takers. 5 are in mitoYDNA which is the most for a direct line found in WikiTree.

John Thorpe's connection to John Paisley Glenn

Nice work Erin!!

Michele Sauvagie was born about 1570 in Nord, France. You can look at the list of her mtDNA descendants to find a starting point to continue her female lines directly downwards. This mtDNA line is believed to extend back 15 generations to a Huguenot emigrant.

I was able to connect Michele's sixth great-granddaughter Huldah Harlan to her husband Daniel Woolley.  Daniel and their 8 children were already on WT without Huldah.  All the children are now connected to their mother. Link to relationship with Huldah Harlan

Awesome Karen! Can I have Huldah's WikiTree-ID so I can award bounty? Thanks!
Thanks, Mindy!  She is Harlan-1320

Katharina von Pfannberg was born about 1332, possibly in Bavaria. You can look at the list of her mtDNA descendants to find a starting point to continue her female lines directly downwards. This mtDNA line is believed to extend back 22 generations to about 1332. It is easiest to see these lines here.

Added Elisabeth Ursula Welf (Welf-91), 8th great grand daughter of Katharina von Pfannberg (Pfannberg-1) and connected this new profile to preexisting profile of her husband Otto Schaumburg (Schaumburg-13) already on WT.

Added Sophie Eleonore Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern and Claudia Eleonore Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern which both are both an end-of-matrilineal line, unfortunately.

Way to go Guillaume and Sven!
I've added a daughter to Christine's brother Johann Adolf : Sophia von Sachsen Weissenfels (Sachsen-128)
