Hello WikiTreers!

Thank you for joining us for the WikiTree Challenge. For each challenge, we partner with another group in the worldwide genealogy community. Together we research seven degrees of connections for seven starting people chosen by our partner.

Challenge #7 was a special one! Our partner is the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS). Founded in 1845, NEHGS is considered by many to be the leading resource for family history research in the US. They help genealogists of all skill levels improve their knowledge and understanding of their family and its place in history.

Our week began Thursday, April 13th, at noon EDT (4pm UTC) and ended April 20th, at noon EDT. You did't need any particular skills to participate, so everyone was welcome to join us. If you did happen to have any experience with New England records then your experience was especially valuable!

You posted any new connections to the global tree, questions or comments about profiles, or bounty claims with the relevant starting profile below.

(Note that comments at the top will be hidden once read.)

Way to rock this!

closed with the note: Thank you for participating! See you for the next challenge.

I am not sure how to contact someone without posting on this page.  I reread the help section and nothing really states the answers. Perhaps my beginner questions could be put in the help files somewhere for others to read?  So I'll ask here.  Am I suppose to be stating what I've done on this "thread"  Profiles I added?  attaching people to existing profiles?
I can look up on Newspapers.com for those without subscription.

Michelle, you can contact another member (such as Mindy Silva or Karen Lowe) via email by going to their profile page (for example, here's Mindy's profile) and clicking on the "send private message" hyperlink near the top of the profile. (If you can't find that link, use Ctrl-F to search the page for those words.)

Pages like Help:WikiTree Challenge and  The_WikiTree_Challenge_2023_Challenge_7 have a lot of good information on how these challenges work. There is no need to report everything we do in this thread; our contributions are tracked automatically in the Challenge Tracker.

Ellen, I think I misunderstood.  I didn't see a challenge tracker  for this challenge when I added a new profile, so I assumed that we had to report every new profile we create on this string.  How are contributions tracked?
If you are registered for this Challenge, all of your edits to profiles within CC7 distance of these people will be tallied automatically.
Worked on profiles of Charles and his sister Rebecca, and left research notes.
Added details and link to his stepmother’s Will

Way to go Heather! Yes, that counts. They don't have to be within seven degrees for connection purposes.
*Created profile for Charlotte (Blanchard) Whitney - blanchard-8136 - first cousin to Lemuel.

*Connected her to existing profile for husband, David Whitney (whitney-6512)

*Connected her to existing profile for son, Newton James Whitney (whitney-6513)
Thanks Sandi!
You profiles will be added to your score automatically Rhonda. Thanks for adding those!!
Is there proof for the parents of Stephen Bedlow?
Mindy, I posted a source to his parents.  I don’t think it is proven 100%.  I couldn’t find a probate record for either parents that I connected.  It is through all of them being in Weymouth.
I think you have enough, between your sources and your research notes. Thanks Karen!!

I think I get a connection bounty? I  connected Watson-28441 Elizabeth (Watson) Andrews (1738-1830) to parents: Watson-24612 Abraham Watson (1712-1790) and Pickering-2778 Elizabeth (Pickering) Watson (1713-1797).

You certainly do, M. Nice work!
YAY! My first connection bounty. Woohoo!

Another connection goes through his granddaughter's husband's second wife's daughter-in-law Eleanor Hoyt, whose father Richard divorced her mother in order to marry Martha (Nicholson) Doubleday, who had divorced her husband Nelson Doubleday, president of the publishing house, in Reno the previous week (but kept the Fifth Avenue apartment across from Central Park Zoo, hosting her wedding to Richard in the apartment). After Richard's death Martha married painter John Lavalle Jr., who isn't on WikiTree yet.

I've filled in  Hannah (Unknown) Pierce as Hannah Stone.  The evidence for the identification is in Research Notes.

Thanks for the additional connection Karen! Nice work M.

Brick Wall Ancestor: George Cockayne b. 1735 Wirksworth, Derbyshire, England

I am convinced everything about his profile even disconnected from the Lynn MA parents is wrong, with the exception of his name. The only part I can document is the second wife, Hannah Clark, who was the widow of a guy named Prindle, Pringle and or Bingly.  I can’t find any proof of Patience Brown, although there were certainly Browns in New Haven.  Donald Lines Jacobus has a brick wall for this Joseph Collins and I think he is right.  I am deleting the b and d dates in Lynn MA from this man.   His family was born in Qiunnipiac, New Haven CT.  The answers may be there, but they are not in Lynn.
I agree Carolyn. There is a family group in New Haven which Patience Collins was clearly apart of.  Time to start from scratch.
The Donald Lines Jacobus book "Families of Ancient New Haven" has Joel Hotchkiss, son of Joseph and Patience Collins, as marrying Abigail Sperry (da. David & Abigail (Perkins) Sperry on 16 Jan 1777. Also noted in "Early Connecticut Marriages as Found on Ancient Church Records Prior to 1800, Book VII" edited by the Rev. Frederic W. Bailey. So think we can put that name in for Abigail's last name instead of "Unknown"?
Added grandfather

Ann
Thank you Joe and Carolyn for collaborating on that. Let us know what you find!

Added Abigail H Sperry as the mother of Abigail Hill Hotchkiss. The fact that her great-grandmother was Abigail Hill helps prove that we have all the connections right. This adds dozens of new ancestors and gets most lines back to the England immigrant. Though pieced together from secondary sources, this line was not generally known and counts to me as another brick wall down.  Thank you Ann.

Cockayne line can go back much further but needs wills looking at for confirmation and more work. Feel free to do anything with the profile  as I have just added the absolute basics.

Ann
Ann do we have anything that proves George Cockayne's father other than the dates are approximately right? It looks pretty good but it is always nice to have some record which confirms his English origins as being Wirksworth, Derbyshire, England.

I need  to look at wills there are plenty for this family on Find My Past. Dunja made the connection to George but I think it needs to be confirmed by another source. So I wouldn’t take it as being 100% certain at present

Ann

Really nice work Ann! These lines are getting huge!

I have been a member of the NEHGS since the 1980s. Back then (pre-Internet), you could actually borrow 150-year-old books through the mail in order to do research at home - I think it was five at a time. These books were often dusty, brittle, and tied together with strings. As much as I love our modern technology, there was nothing like researching from an actual piece of history to ignite a teenager's lifelong love of genealogy.

I would absolutely love to be a part of this challenge.
by David Randall G2G6 Pilot (356k points)
The good old days lol. I don't miss microfiche or microfilm though. I don't have to look at it often nowadays. Thanks for joining us David!
I too borrowed books regularly from NEHGS back in the 1980s. It was such a great service and so cool to hold and read through those old books. How I wish I had done a better job of documenting and citing what I saw back then!
