Hi Wonderful WikiTreers! Military and War Project, along with its sub-project, The US Civil War Project, is hosting its first Pop-Up Challenge. We’re starting and a Civil War infantry unit, the [[Category: 21st Regiment, Alabama Infantry, United States Civil War]].  Currently, the category groups 16 profiles, but the regiment numbered over 2500 during the course of the war. Let’s add more profiles for men of this unit.

You’ll find names here:

*https://archives.alabama.gov/research/CivilWarService.aspx (just type 21st Alabama Regiment in the Regiment box and then click the search button for a list of names)

*https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/21st_Regiment,_Alabama_Infantry Information about the companies in the regiment

Add their profiles, with some sources, and the regiment category (alone or by using the US Civil War template).Speaking of the template, use it this way, filling in the names and dates, if known. For the rank, use the person’s final rank:

{{US Civil War

|side=CSA

|regiment name=21st Alabama Regiment

|unit=21st Regiment, Alabama Infantry

|rank=

|startdate=

|enddate=}}

Add family if you can, but if you want to get as many soldiers added as you can, just add [[Category:Alabama, Needs Profiles Added]] and [[Category:US Civil War Needs Connection]] so that people can work on them during the Connect-a-Thon.

Thanks, and let’s see how much we can grow the regiment.  Be sure to report back with any good stories you run up against. We are not tracking the work, but we do thank you for participating!

UPDATE:

Starting number of profiles - 16

End number: 59

Thanks for all of your help everyone!

Hints for searching in FamilySearch for USCW personnel:

1. Use a date range for birth date from 1815 to 1849. Some boys as young as 13 or 14 joined the war effort.

2. Start with Alabama as the birth place. Some of the men may have been born in other states, but it's a good starting place for the research.

3. Fold3 is probably a great resource as well, if you subscribe.

4. Check Find A Grave for clues, such as this one.

Here is another site that lists names from the 21st Alabama Infantry: Alabama Civil War Homepage - 21st Alabama Infantry

24 hours in and we have tripled the number of profiles!

If this helps anyone:

  1. Ancestry List of Names for the 21st Alabama
  2. ...and the Enumeration of CSA Soldiers living in Alabama, 1907 (I've been trolling through this list trying to pick up a soldier or two)

Sandy, what did your mom tell you about picking up soldiers!  You could end up in a party! laugh

Well, I did use to hang out in Annapolis, Maryland... trolling.   Might be how I captured a Marine. :)

Too funny, Jo!
Lucky girl and lucky marine.

I scored on the first pick from you list - Timoleon Adams was in the 21.  I picked him because of the unusual given name. Score!
