War of 1812 Discharge Papers - NARA or other?

Has anyone requested War of 1812 military discharge papers from NARA or what on-line database do you use? I have searched the on line databases at Ancestry and FamilySearch and cannot find the same records that are identified by NARA.  I'd like to understand the process for ordering for a specific unit (in my case 12th Infantry) or individual (in my case Capt James Charlton, Virginia).  See Catagory "12th Regiment, United States Infantry, War of 1812" for specifics.

Thanks - Jim

Fold3 has a file on the 12th Virginia Infantry, Capt James Charlton's company.  It contains discharge papers for all his men, but unfortunately it doesn't appear to include his own.  Do you have information on his commanding officer? Perhaps that file might be where his discharge would be found.
Thank you Karen, I wil take a look at Fold3 the next time I go to my local genealogy group, where they have an account.  I believe that the commanding officer was Col. Preston.
