Caroline Tews, nee Zittlau, is my maternal grandmother.  I know she was born on August 16, 1893, but I don't know where.  At the age of 19 she met my grandfather, Edward John Tews.  He was on his way to Canada and she desperately wished to leave her home.  Parents, John and Matilda Zittlau,  nee Rau,  permitted her to leave. Later Edward and Caroline embarked in Bremerhaven, Germany in route to Canada. I have no crossing papers  on Edward and Caroline or  the Raus. Maybe they were lost in WWII.  April 16, 1914, Caroline married Edward.  Jan. 20 1915 my mother, Hedwig was born.  In November of 1915, the three Tewses took a train to the US. Again no papers or knowledge of entry point to the US.  The family stayed with Caroline's sister for a year or so and the they move to Detroit on Marion St.  Two more children were add and then they went back north to Clare Co. and purchased a farm.  More babies came and Edward decided he could make more money working in a factory un Detroit,  Caring for so many children, house work and then running the farm was too much for her and she left in 1927.  Caroline went to her sister's and found a job in a laundry.  She also had a seventh child.  The owner of the laundry was moving to New York City and wanted Caroline to go with him and his wife.  Leaving her child with her sister. After  3 years she decided adoption was the right thing to do.  So Eleanor was adopted by Olrich's in Detroit.  Edward could not manage the six other children and decided to have the baby, or youngest adopted.  The remainder of the children were farmed out to other friends and family.  The family never heard from Caroline .  Her last address was 21-61 30th St., Long Island City, Queens, New York.  The 1940 Alien Registration came and she filled it out.  That is last bit of info I have about Caroline Tews' life.

Not an answer to your question but was Hedwig born in Winnipeg?  The Manitoba vital statistics site shows the birth of a Hedwig Pews on 21 January 1915 to a Caroline Zitlan.  I cannot seem to link to the search result but you can search yourself here https://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

She might be found to start at Immigration Canada, passenger lists although you will have to be very patient about finding them.  That's for arrival here.

As for entry into the US, likely no record would exist if they went by rail, border crossings between the two countries were pretty much uncontrolled in the relevant period, at least by land.  If you know the place of birth of your mother, then take a look at the rail lines between there and Detroit.  The move appears to be close enough to her birth for them to have been in the same place.
