Cemeteries are among the most valuable of historic resources. They can serve as reminders of various settlement patterns, or they can reveal information about historic events, religions, lifestyles, and most importantly, our genealogy. Unfortunately, these cemeteries do not necessarily remain permanent reminders of our ancestors and past since they are subject to long-term deterioration, neglect, development activities and construction projects, and even vandalism and theft.

Volunteers in the Cemeterist Project are helping to preserve the world's cemeteries. Volunteers are currently needed for photography or indexing. You can help in any way that suits you! Will you join us?

I'd love to join. I recently created a few Free Space Profiles for some cemeteries in Texas and have some gravestone photos I can add them. I live in Washington state and would be happy to help in that area.

The cemetery I would like to work on has a very long official name, but is generally referred to by a much shorter one. Is there a limit on the size of the name and how are alternate names handled? (I feel very new at this so would appreciate help in setting things up.)
Another question is: I see there is already another  cemetery page set up where I have other ancestors buried - how do I add them to that cemetery?  (I have tried to find the answer but haven't been successful.)   Thanks.
Hi Virginia, please look for a private message from me. Thanks.

I am currently living in Kamloops, British Columbia.  Here we have several cemeteries, some of long duration (relatively speaking).  We also have a Chinese graveyard (they were required to be buried separately in our country's past).  I would be happy to spend some time walking and photographing graves and creating or linking the information to profiles, but am not sure exactly how or where to start.

Hello - I'd like to join.

How do you handle duplicate entries for cemeteries?  I believe the following cemeteries are the same cemetery:

[[Category:Fells United Methodist Church Cemetery, Rostraver Township, Pennsylvania]]

[[Category:Fells Church Cemetery, Fellsburg, Pennsylvania]]

See:  https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/263920/fells-church-cemetery

Hello Lisa. We're glad that you're interested in joining us in the Cemeterist Project. Please look for a private message from me. Thank you.

Lisa, I called the church affiliated with the cemeteries. You are correct, these two cemeteries are duplicates and should be merged. But there is another issue with the setting up of the category which I will be working on. Thanks for bringing this up.

"Will you join us" ?  Perhaps but I am new and find this site so far not very user friendly so currently I am just browsing through to see what I can understand about it, since I already have used Ancestry for years, I even question the value that this may or may not have for me. I will say that I live in an area with historic Cemetaries and in fact right on the same street of one I take walks through occasionally read names and dates and the sweet things that are spoken on them but am very dismayed that the older they become the less attention by anybody in their family may give them mostly because some families may not even live here anymore, many are grown over ,crusted over an difficult to read now I have thought about making a project of cleaning maybe a dozen a week but that once upon a time was what the towns people used to do it was felt to be a civil duty or responsibility to take care of their local cemeteries, now days I don't know if I would have to ask permission from the owners of the funeral home and the ?

I used Ancestry for 20 years or more and when I first joined this site in 2011 I thought it was hard to understand and didn't take the time.  About 3 years ago I came back to it and started browsing it, then decided to add a few of my family, then before I knew it I realized I liked it a lot more than Ancestry.  It is also 100% more accurate than Ancestry when the members add in their sources to their family like they are asked to.  So add the profiles of a family member or two, it will help you to understand how to use it.

Hi - I'd like to join! I created a free space page for a cemetary in Mooi River South Africa where a few of my ancestors are interred as a practice step for beginners (I'm a bit new here) and it was recommended I join this project. Taking a look at some of the examples I'd love to convert the cemetery I am working on to the format of those in your project and connect all the profiles.

I am interested. I haven't done a lot with cemeteries in my immediate area, but I have a lot of dead relatives concentrated in a few cemeteries, so can certainly contribute more when I visit them. Find A Grave regularly has photo requests in my area too, so I plan to help more with those as well.
