How to find documentation of person from 1780?

I am trying to find parents of Abner GREEN, b 1780, d 1816.  His father is reportedly John GREEN - guess how many of those there are? (18!!). Abner born in Orange Co, NC, died in Wake Co, NC.  He married Elizabeth GEORGE Oct, 1805 in Wake Co, NC. How can I whittle this down?

Abner Green has a profile on the FamilySearch tree; the notes say he died in Portsmouth, Virginia in January of 1815 while in military service as a private in Company G, 1st Regiment, North Carolina Militia, and further says that his father was a John Green.

Thank you for such a quick reply.  I did forget to mention that there are two Abner Green's at roughly the same time and area.  The one you found is not the correct one.  I am confident in the NC info; I'm just trying to find documentation somewhere as to the father.  Thanks, though.  I do appreciate it.

Here's a possible on Roots Web.

I've often found that a direct Google search will get me more options and closer than searching either Wikitree or Ancestry.

Hope this is the one.  Good luck.

This is him.  And thanks for the advice!!
Glad that worked out.

I get alerts for the George family (as well as my other family lines) when your question popped up.  My Georges also lived in and around Hillsborough, NC at that time.  There was an Elizabeth in the family, but she was born later and wasn't married to a Green.  Your Elizabeth George doesn't show up in any of the trees I've researched, but then you never know.  Too much of a coincidence with that fairly uncommon name and locale in the same time frame.

There were two primary George immigrants into Virginia from which most of the Georges have descended, so I've been told - a Capt John George and a Nicholas George.  My line seems to have come from Nicholas.
I haven't had any luck getting documentation on this, either.  I am a direct descendant of Abner.  I wouldn't have thought Abner too common, but there are two of them pretty close in age but in different parts of North Carolina and with different wives.  Go figure!

I will keep hunting on both.  Please keep me in mind if you find anything new and I will do the same.  Nice meeting you, potential cousin :-)
Larry - I'm not sure why this didn't occur to me earlier.  Ancestry has some of my ancestors marked as DNA verified. When I look at Abner Green and Elizabeth George, they have Elizabeth marked as DNA verified rather than Abner.  So, perhaps I should be focussing on Elizabeth more?

I am making plans to go to North Carolina for research over winter break.  What should I go looking for?
Yep.  Elizabeth should be the target.  As to search options, try public libraries.  Hillsborough has a pretty good genealogy section as well as a fairly knowledgeable research librarian.  You might try libraries in Wake as well as Durham.  I'll bet the Univ of NC has a good section as well.

I have some Deed books from Orange Co., NC.  Let me take a look there and see if I find any reference to either Abner or Elizabeth.  Haven't done that yet.  That part of Wake Co. was originally part of Orange Co.

Good luck.  Keep me posted.
Switch over to regular email so I can more easily send you some stuff.
