In seeking a birth/baptism record in England for John Puckett (c1620, maybe earlier/maybe later), the following comment was posted as a lead:

Something called Somerset and Dorset Notes & Queries, Vol 27, p. 63 has an entry:  PUCKETT, JOHN, OF VIRGINIA

I found a Thomas Puckett in volume 8 (see this comment), but the HathiTrust catalog for Notes & Queries for Somerset and Dorset only goes to volume 21.

Liz,

Digitised copies of volumes 1-30 (1890-1980) of SDNQ are available on FindMyPast

https://www.sdnq.org.uk/where-to-find-copies-of-sdnq/

Thanks Steve. I don't have a subscription, so I couldn't see the digitized page, but it did give me enough info to find most of the page 63 entry in Google Books snippit view:

From vol. 27, Google Book (limited search, but p 63 partially in view):

  • "John Puckett of Virginia. The following is an extract from the Virginia Land Grants VII, 200: "757 acres to Wm. Puckett and Thos. Puckett 20 Nov. 1682, in County of Henrico, 500 acres being above Mr. Wm. Baugh, North Side Appomatox River, being patent by John Puckett 27 Jan. 1665, and by will and testament given to sons Wm. and Thos. Puckett, 257 acres being residue adjoining Richard Womeck, Wm. Baugh, and John Puckett's patent, due for transportation of 6 persons (Jane White, Alice..."

This is of interest, because a similar entry from Cavaliers and Pioneers lists 6 transported people that don't include Jane White or an Alice:

From Nugent's Cavaliers & Pioneers, Volume Three: 1695-1732, page 23:

  • "John Puckett, 257 acs.; Henrico Co; adj. Richard Womecke; down the Spring Bottom; to Mr. William Baugh, &c.; 15 Oct. 1698, p. 168. Part of 757 acs. granted to William Pockett & Thomas Pockett, 20 Nov. 1682, deserted & now granted by order, &c. Trans. of 6 pers: Thomas Peterson, Wm. Nicholas, Mary Nicholas, Hen. Drewry, Peter Morgan, Robt. Dolby."

Not what you were looking for, and you might have already seen this title, but I couldn't find ref to it on John Puckett's profile - this title on the Internet Archive looks to have much of the same info but may provide other insights:

Query:

"The family of John Puckett consisted of his wife Anne, sons John, Thomas, and William, and daughter Ruth...

"A Thomas Puckett, of Upcerne, Dorset, sailed from Weymouth 20 June 1628 in the Abigail ... and it is possible that John, too, was a Dorset man. ... The aforsaid Thomas Puckett, a single man, lost his life soon after his arrival at Salem. ... Portesham, where a Giles Puckett had children baptised during the period 1686-1709."

A Thomas Puckett, of Upcerne, Dorset

I noticed Pucketts in the 1642 Protestation Return transcript on the Dorset OPC page for Up Cerne - William Snr, William Jnr and John. Thomas could well be a son and brother of some of these.

Salem? As in New England? That's the wrong family.
In the Abigail - it's what the man said. There were lots of Dorset people onboard.

That's useful to rule out the Up Cerne family.

You might want to look at Bridport, Dorset. It was quite an important seaport in the 16th/17th centuries and a prominent centre for rope making. Ancestry lists quite a few Pucketts between 1600-1700. I have some antecendents of my own that trace back to Bridport and I certainly found that the Ancestry transcriptions leave out, or muddle, quite a few records from around this time, probably since the parish registers are quite difficult to read. I went through the Bridport registers with a fine toothed-comb and discovered extra family. Surrounding parishes such as Lyme Regis and Abbotsbury also show a smattering of Puckett activity and there are more along the coast past Portland towards Swanage and Studland.
